Scallions price increases, farmers earn 150 million/ha

(Baonghean.vn) - After a period of time, the price of green onions dropped, at times only 1,500 VND/kg, but now the price has increased to 4,000 - 6,000 VND/kg. With the good price of green onions, people in Quynh Luu district have an income of about 150 million VND/ha.

Taking advantage of the rising onion prices, Mr. Le Van Tam's family in Quynh Luong commune went to the field to harvest more than 1 sao of green onions to import to wholesalers. Mr. Tam said that since Tet, the price of green onions has dropped dramatically, at times only 1,000 - 1,500 VND/kg, making onion growers worried.

Because the investment for each sao of onions is about 1.5 - 2 million VND, when the onion price drops like that, we have to compensate for the loss of nearly 500,000 VND/sao. However, since the beginning of June, the price of green onions has increased to 6,000 VND/kg; on average, 1 sao of green onions, after deducting costs, earns a profit of about 7 million VND/crop.

Scallions are a spice plant that can be eaten fresh or used as raw materials for food processing industries, so the annual consumption demand is very large. Determining market demand and surveying local conditions, since 2010, the coastal communes of Quynh Luu district have made scallion a key crop and produced it year-round.

"Scallions are easy to grow, drought-resistant, and have a fast crop rotation, so they are highly profitable. Each year, you can grow 3-5 batches of onions, each batch lasting 40-55 days. If you take good care of them and follow the technical process, 1 sao of onions will yield about 1.5 tons/crop. Currently, the price of onions is 6,000 VND/kg, so with an area of ​​more than 2 sao, I earn about 15 million VND in profit," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Sau, an onion grower in Quynh Luong commune.

Quynh Luong commune currently has 215 hectares specializing in vegetable production, of which 80% of the area specializes in growing green onions. Each year, the whole commune supplies the market with about 20,000 tons of various vegetables, of which green onions account for nearly 15,000 tons, worth more than 40 billion VND.

Mr. Ho Nguyen Tuan - Vice Chairman of Quynh Luong Commune People's Committee said that recently, the price of green onions has been lower than the average of previous years, sometimes down to just over 1,000 VND/kg. Now the price has increased 4-5 times, which is a motivation to create excitement for agricultural production in the coming time.
