Outstanding efficiency from planting sweet corn varieties
(Baonghean.vn) - After the first successful trial crop on an area of 10 hectares, this winter crop, Thanh Nho commune, Thanh Chuong district (Nghe An) planted an additional 30 hectares of Thai sweet corn. The results showed that the corn yielded high yields, and farmers were excited because the corn was sold right in the field.
This winter,Nearly 200 households in 8 hamlets, Thanh Nho commune (Thanh Chuong) had a bumper sweet corn crop. This is the second crop that people have grown short-term corn varieties, which are sold right in the fields after harvest.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha in Xom Moi said that this is a new corn variety, harvested when young so the crop has a short duration, the average yield is 5-6 quintals/sao. With a purchase price of 350,000 VND/quintal, each sao of sweet corn brings in a revenue of more than 2 million VND/sao, double that of regular corn, and does not need to be dried or harvested; the stalks are still green and can be used as animal feed, so farmers are very excited.

According to Thanh Nho commune people, growing this corn variety is as simple as other corn varieties. In addition, the company also provides seeds, technical guidance and guarantees the product. After harvesting, farmers have to pay for the seeds by deducting them from the product.
With an area of 23 hectares and a total yield of about 230 tons, this crop, Thanh Nho commune residents earned nearly 1 billion VND from sweet corn.
Sweet corn with the scientific name Hi-brix53, Thai variety, is a product used to make fried corn with butter, corn soup in restaurants and used in many other foods. This corn variety has a growing period of about 80 days in spring, summer and autumn and 90 days in winter.
Through monitoring the growth process, people realized that this is a good corn variety with few pests and diseases, but in the winter crop, it is often damaged by rats when newly sown.

According to Mr. Tran Phi Hung - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Chuong district, growing sweet corn is a direction to implement the project "Restructuring the agricultural sector of Nghe An province" and the project "Developing some commodity crops to create raw material areas associated with processing and consumption of products in the period 2016 - 2020" of Thanh Chuong district. From the results in Thanh Nho commune, the district will expand the area to communes across the district.
With the results of 2 sweet corn crops planted in the area, Thanh Nho commune signed a contract with Dong Giao Company Limited to continue producing 30 hectares in the spring crop of 2018. Currently, the locality is coordinating with the company to disburse money from corn sales to encourage people before the new crop.
