Struggling to prepare for the exam for nearly a year and "wrestling" to get a place to take the competency assessment exam is the reality taking place in this year's exam season in Nghe An in particular. The race with separate exams also makes many 12th graders face many difficulties and choices.

Betting on the exam

"I woke up very early, went to the Internet cafe and sat there for more than a morning but in the end I was not successful in registering. I was really disappointed" - that is the sharing of Nhat Minh - a 12E student - Huynh Thuc Khang High School (Vinh City) after being denied a place to participate in the Hanoi National University's Competency Assessment Exam.

This student is then forced to choose option 2 which is to participate.Aptitude testof Hanoi National University of Education to increase the chance of admission to university. However, this is not Minh's optimal solution, because the separate exam of Hanoi National University of Education is mainly for admission to pedagogical schools, of which there are more than 20 schools. Meanwhile, the Competency Assessment Test of Hanoi National University has more than 100 universities using the results for admission and the number of majors and occupations is also wider, making it easier for candidates to register.

In the same school as Nhat Minh, class 12A1 (class for block A of Huynh Thuc Khang High School), although the class has nearly 50 students, in the recent registration period, only more than 30 students in the class were lucky enough to get a place to attend the Hanoi National University's Competency Assessment Exam.

Student Khanh Linh - class 12 A1 said: "Many of my classmates felt very sad because they could not participate in this exam. I myself sat from morning until 11 am but was unsuccessful in registering. After that, I was lucky to have my family join in supporting me so I was able to register for a spot in the 5th exam round in Nam Dinh".

In order to reserve a place to attend the Competency Assessment Exam, all 40 students of class 12A - Anh Son 1 High School woke up early in the morning and divided into 2 groups to gather at 2 Internet cafes in town with the reason "the network at the Internet cafe will have faster speed than the network at home".

Luckily, after many hours of registration and many emotions, 100% of the students in the class successfully registered, of which about 20 students will take the exam in Hanoi. The remaining candidates will take the exam in Hai Phong, Thai Nguyen, Ninh Binh...

Talking about this exam, student Vo Ta Le Cuong - class 12A1, Anh Son 1 High School, said that his goal in this year's admission season is to be admitted to the electronic circuit major of Hanoi National University and Hanoi University of Science and Technology. This is a major with high competition and standard scores, so even though he can be admitted based on talent (good students of the province), he still wants to participate in the competency assessment exams to increase his chances of being admitted.

The registration process, for Cuong, was truly a "gamble". Luckily, he won a place in Hanoi, but Cuong said that was just the "beginning". After this exam, Cuong still has one more exam to take to assess his thinking at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, and the High School Graduation Exam.

Race against multiple exams

After returning from the competency assessment exam on March 16, Bao Ngoc - a 12th grade student at Huynh Thuc Khang High School (Vinh City) still seemed uneasy even though she had achieved 103/150 points. Moreover, this score was not enough for her to be admitted to the Accounting and Auditing major at the National Economics University as her goal.

To take part in this exam, Ngoc traveled nearly 500km from Vinh city to Thai Nguyen city. As one of the first candidates to take this year's Competency Assessment Exam, Bao Ngoc said, "The exam was more difficult than I expected."

"I spent all my time in grade 12 preparing for my separate exams, but after more than 3 hours of doing the test, there were many questions that I could not complete. The Math test was long and difficult, with a lot of knowledge from the old program. The Literature and Language test had many questions that we had learned since primary school. I was only confident in English because this was my advantage.

Previously, Ngoc had an IELTS certificate of 7.0, won second prize in the provincial English competition, but she said that the opportunities to enter university with these criteria are still difficult. Therefore, after the competency assessment exam in Hanoi, at the end of March this year, she will go to Hue to take the competency assessment exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University and must make an effort in the high school graduation exam to increase her chances of admission.

Pressure is a common reality for 12th grade students because currently, the rate of schools choosing the results of the High School Graduation Exam for university admission is getting lower and lower.

Therefore, the Competency Assessment Test is increasingly chosen by many candidates. However, because this is a separate exam for universities, many candidates face many difficulties in studying, reviewing and taking the exam. Currently, in Nghe An, there is almost no center that organizes review for the Competency Assessment Test for candidates.

To prepare for this exam, most candidates choose an online review course that costs between 3 and 5 million VND. In addition to the difficulty in registering for the exam and reviewing for the exam, having to travel to many different provinces and cities for many months also causes many families to spend more money.

This year, Hanoi National University organized 6 rounds of competency assessment exams with 90,000 exam seats. However, on the first registration day from 9:00 a.m. on February 23, more than 250,000 users visited the homepage and 121,055 candidate accounts logged in to choose exam sessions. Due to the large number of registrations, there were times when the network was congested and many candidates had to wait about 30 - 60 minutes to choose their exam location and session.

A special thing about this year's exam is that, according to the regulations, each candidate can register for a maximum of 2 exam sessions. However, after the first registration period, all exam spots were booked, so no candidate could register for 2 exam sessions.
