At least 30 people were killed and dozens more were missing after a boat sank on the evening of May 25 on a lake in the western Democratic Republic of Congo.

AFP news agency quoted the mayor of Inongo city, Simon Mbo Wemba, saying that so far 30 bodies have been recovered, including 12 women, 11 children and 7 men.

He also added that when the accident happened, there were more than 350 passengers on board, of which only 183 survived.

According to Mr. Wemba, the casualty figure is only provisional, because it is difficult to know the exact number of passengers because many people could be illegal immigrants.

River transport is one of the most popular forms of transport in the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, accidents involving boats are common, mainly due to overloading of passengers and cargo. The casualty rate is often high because there are no life jackets and many people cannot swim.

Last month, at least 167 people died in two accidents, prompting President Felix Tshisekedi to order mandatory lifebuoys on passenger ships.
