(Baonghean.vn) - Alternating sunny and rainy weather, along with high humidity, has led to the proliferation of brown planthoppers and white-backed planthoppers, attacking summer-autumn rice crops. To proactively control the disease, the Quy Chau District Plant Cultivation and Protection Station has collaborated with farmers to intensify field inspections and take timely action to minimize the impact on rice yields.

The family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha in Block 3, Tan Lac town, had 0.3 hectares of rice paddies that were all devastated by brown planthoppers and white-backed planthoppers. After discovering that the rice plants were turning yellow and had brown planthoppers and white-backed planthoppers on them, her family proactively sprayed them with Sutin insecticide to minimize damage to their rice yield.

In the 2017 summer-autumn crop season, Quy Chau district planted nearly 900 hectares of rice. Currently, the rice is in the tillering and heading stages; however, the rice fields are being ravaged by pests, mainly brown planthoppers, white-backed planthoppers, and bacterial blight. To date, nearly 200 hectares of rice in the district have been infested with planthoppers, including 29 hectares with moderate infestation and 2 hectares with severe infestation.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Linh, in charge of the Crop Cultivation and Plant Protection Station of Quy Chau district, said: "To proactively and effectively control pests and diseases, minimize damage caused by pests and diseases, and prevent their outbreak and spread, which can affect rice yield, we recommend spraying only on rice fields from the tillering stage to the heading stage where the density of planthoppers is 1,000 or more per square meter."2Apply one of the following pesticides: Chess 50WG, Oshin 20WP, Elsin 10 EC, Sutin 50 SC, Chatot 600 WG… to control pests according to the recommended dosage. When spraying, there is no need to part the rice plants, but ensure sufficient water and pesticide solution (24-30 liters/500m2) and lower the nozzle to evenly wet the stems and leaves of the rice plants.

To effectively control rice planthoppers, farmers need to regularly inspect their fields and detect pests and diseases promptly. In addition, balanced fertilization of rice plants is also very important; farmers should absolutely avoid applying excessive amounts of nitrogen fertilizer.
