More than 3,600 billion VND to upgrade and renovate the railway radius
Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) has just proposed to the Ministry of Transport the policy of investing in the construction of projects to upgrade old railways and renovate the railway surface with small radius curves in the Hanoi-Vinh and Saigon-Nha Trang sections.with a total investment of more than 3,600 billion VND (nearly 170 million USD).

According to VNR's assessment, in reality, the volume of freight and passenger transport by railway is small compared to other forms of transport. In particular, on the North-South railway line, there are still many sections with degraded railway infrastructure, old and outdated railway superstructure, and many sections of the roadbed have collapsed due to not being upgraded for many years, affecting train speed, including the Hanoi-Vinh and Saigon-Nha Trang sections.
In order to enhance capacity and improve train speed on the Thong Nhat railway line, the railway industry has implemented many projects to renovate and upgrade the current railway line. However, regarding the renovation and upgrading of railway infrastructure, there are only projects to replace concrete sleepers, extend the station line, and add track number 3 for stations with only 2 lines in the Vinh-Nha Trang section.
“To promote the effectiveness of the entire North-South railway line, upgrading the Hanoi-Vinh and Saigon-Nha Trang sections is extremely necessary,” said Mr. Doi Sy Hung, Deputy General Director of VNR.
Accordingly, the railway system in the Hanoi-Vinh section will upgrade the old track, keeping the same level; renovate the roadbed to replace the upper-rail structure, switches, and sleepers; extend the station line... with a total investment of VND2,534 billion (USD117.89 million), with an expected length of 288.5km.
In addition, the Hanoi-Vinh section also renovated the flat sections with curves of small radius, which are critical sections with difficult terrain and low train speeds, often threatening train safety with 33 locations/40 curves, the renovation length is 14.5km with the amount of 641 billion VND (29.84 million USD).
For the Nha Trang-Sai Gon railway section, VNR only renovates the surface, increases the radius of the curve, and combines synchronous treatment of longitudinal profiles, roadbeds, and upper-floor architecture with related technical infrastructure works. The estimated volume is 11 locations/33 curves, the renovation length is 10.2km with a capital of 449 billion VND (20.92 million USD).
According to Mr. Doi Sy Hung, the capital source for upgrading and renovating the curve radius of the railway industry will be implemented according to the investment source from the State budget and based on the allocated capital for implementation (expected to be implemented in 2016-2020).
“When the project is implemented, it will increase the volume of transportation and circulation of goods and passengers between regions, reduce transportation costs, and at the same time overcome the problem of oversized and overloaded transportation, reduce pressure on road transportation, and develop tourism and services nationwide,” Mr. Doi Sy Hung assessed.
After the implementation policy is approved and the capital plan is arranged, Vietnam Railway Corporation will implement the project in accordance with current regulations such as selecting investors, construction management, basic design, technical design and construction drawing design.
