Lemons near harvest died in hamlet 2A, Hung Yen Bac.

We went to the lemon garden of Mr. Dinh Xuan Lam's family in Hamlet 2A, Hung Yen Bac. The once lush lemon gardens were now dry and burnt due to drought and lack of irrigation water. More than a dozen trees had dried up and 50-60 were wilting. If there was no rain in the next few days, they would all die, causing an estimated loss of hundreds of millions of dong when the lemon trees were in their prime.

Mr. Nguyen Nhu Hung's family in Hamlet 3A, Hung Yen Bac, planted 400 lemon trees on an area of 6 sao of hill garden. His entire lemon garden has been bearing fruit for 5-6 years. The lemons, which are only as big as a thumb, are wilting on the trees. The lemon trees that are close to harvest are also drying up. Although Mr. Hung's family has invested tens of millions of dong in drilling wells and pumping water to irrigate the lemons, due to the intense heat that has lasted for many days, the lemons cannot survive, and 100 lemon trees are dying.

“My family lost about 100 million VND from this lemon crop. It was too hot to water again, and the well was dry. If it doesn’t rain in a few days, my family’s lemon garden will die,” said Mr. Hung.

Lemon growers must cut down dead lemons.

The situation of lemon trees dying due to drought not only happens in the lemon gardens of Mr. Hung and Mr. Lam's family, but currently most of the lemon gardens in Hung Yen Bac, Hung Nguyen district are withering and dying due to drought.

Mr. Hoang Duc Chuyen - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Hung Yen Bac commune said: Through inspection, it shows that currently the entire lemon area of more than 200 hectares of Hung Yen Bac has withered, some trees have died. If the drought lasts for about 1 more week, all the lemon trees will likely die. Many households have also drilled wells to water the lemon trees, but because the rainfall in the past 3 years has been too little, the water from the wells is not enough to pump.

“Last week was so hot that many lemon trees died. If the weather continues to be hot in the coming days, the number of dead lemon trees will increase. My family has also drilled a well and installed a water pump, but now nearly 100 lemon trees have died due to the drought,” Mr. Chuyen added.

The severe drought is seriously affecting lemon trees in two communes, Hung Yen Bac and Hung Yen Nam, Hung Nguyen district. In Hung Yen Bac commune alone, there are more than 200 hectares of lemon trees, of which 75% have withered. If there is no rain in another week, 90% of the lemon trees in Hung Yen Bac will die.

According to preliminary statistics, up to this point, about 110 hectares of lemon trees have withered. Some households have also drilled wells to pump water for irrigation, cut eucalyptus branches, and used straw to cover the roots, but due to the harsh drought that has lasted for so long, it is difficult to save them - said Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huu, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hung Yen Bac Commune.
