More than a month after the new generation of domestically assembled Hyundai Grand i10 was launched on the market, we had the opportunity to drive and experience the fuel economy of this small car on a journey of nearly 160 km from Hanoi to Ha Long.

The 11 new generation Grand i10s that Hyundai used in this journey are in two variants: sedan and hatchback. All are equipped with a 1.2-liter Kappa gasoline engine combined with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The manual measurement method by filling the fuel tank, sealing the tank cap and resetting the total mileage meter on the route from Hanoi to Ha Long is applied by the organizers to calculate the fuel consumption of each car. To ensure fairness, each Hyundai Grand i10 has 3 drivers participating.

Starting from the center of Hanoi, following the instructions of the car's navigation system, we followed the inner-city routes leading to the suburbs. With a compact design and a ground clearance of 152 mm, the Hyundai Grand i10 is quite flexible when moving in narrow inner-city routes. However, the constant traffic congestion during rush hour is really a challenge for drivers as well as the fuel economy of the Hyundai Grand i10.

Following the Ring Road 3 leading to the southeastern gateway of Hanoi, the convoy continued to follow each other onto Highway 5B towards Ha Long. Within the speed limit, the drivers had the opportunity to "show off" their skills in controlling the accelerator, creating momentum for the car to coast, maintaining a stable speed so that the car "consumes" the least amount of fuel. According to a driver participating in this experience, when the weight between the cars is not too different and traveling on the same distance, the fuel consumption will depend largely on the driver's skills. Trying to maintain a steady speed for the car to coast, limiting sudden braking and using the appropriate air conditioning system will help the car save fuel.

With the itinerary provided by the organizers, drivers have the opportunity to experience the Hyundai Grand i10 on many different routes. In addition to inner-city roads, highways... to reach Ha Long, you have to go through National Highway 10 and National Highway 18. This route is about 80 km long but traffic conditions are quite complicated when the lanes are narrow and there are many trucks and containers circulating. This creates many difficulties for drivers.

After nearly 3 hours of travel, the vehicles gathered at the fuel metering location. Most of the odometers on the Hanoi-Ha Long route ranged from 156 to 158 km. The amount of fuel consumed by each vehicle was measured by pumping and measuring the amount of additional fuel at the destination.

The Hyundai Grand i10 2017 with the best result belongs to the hatchback version, consuming 5.9 liters of gasoline for a total journey of 156 km, equivalent to 3.78 liters/100 km. The result comes from the efforts of the whole team when minimizing the use of the air conditioning system and trying to control the accelerator to maintain a stable speed... a member of the experience team also had to admit that, with the 1.2 liter Kappa engine integrated with variable valve control technology (CVVT) combined with a 4-speed automatic transmission, it brings very impressive fuel economy.

The new generation of Grand i10 is assembled by Hyundai Thanh Cong at the factory located in Ninh Binh. In addition to design upgrades and additional features, the 2017 Hyundai Grand i10 is equipped with a 1.2-liter engine that produces 87 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 120 Nm at 4,000 rpm.

The CVVT variable valve technology on the Hyundai Grand i10 2017 engine is considered one of the important factors that help the car ensure operating power and fuel economy.
