AFP quoted the above official as saying that in addition to the three people killed, the attack on Al-Fawwar barracks, near the town of Quneitra, the capital of Quneitra province, in southwestern Syria, also injured two soldiers. However, it is not yet clear whether this was an airstrike or artillery fire.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the attack targeted "an arms depot" at the camp.

The Israeli military has declined to comment.

On April 21, the Israeli army announced that it was targeting positions inside Syria in retaliation for an earlier shelling in the northern Golan Heights area.

Israel attacked a Syrian army position in Quneitra province, Golan Heights, "causing damage", SANA news agency reported.

Syria considers anti-government rebel groups "terrorists" and accuses Israel of backing them.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometers of the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it in a move not recognized by the international community. Syria currently controls about 510 square kilometers of the Golan Heights.

Technically, Syria and Israel remain at war, but the border between the two countries was generally stable for decades until the conflict erupted in Syria in 2011.
