American experts indicate that to ensure the health of teenagers, middle and high schools should only start classes from 8:30 onwards.

Every parent has seen their child refuse to wake up and try to sleep in before school. Now, American researchers say school start times should be adjusted to give children enough rest.

According toCBS NewsThe American Society of Sleep Medicine (ASSM) recommends that middle and high schools start classes at 8:30 a.m. or later. This helps reduce tardiness and truancy while also increasing safety while driving. The adjustment also ensures that students are alert and ready to learn.

"Starting school too early deprives kids of sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation is linked to a host of problems, including poor school performance, depression, and car accidents," said Nathaniel Watson, Ph.D., former president of the AASM. "Starting school at 8:30 a.m. or later gives kids the opportunity to get the rest they need to learn and function at their best."

Previously, the AASM recommended that teens aged 13-18 get 8-10 hours of sleep each night. However, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention points out that this standard is hardly met, with more than 60% of high school students sleeping less than 7 hours on weekdays.

In Vietnam, according to statistics published by pediatrician Johnathan Halevy at a conference on the consequences of sleep deprivation in 2016, half of preschool children and 40% of adolescents sleep less than they need. The main reason is the daily schedule with a large amount of homework, dense social activities and the habit of using electronic devices.
