This is one of the events ahead of the 16th Francophone Summit, which will take place on November 26-27 in the capital Antananarivo.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, President of Madagascar Hery Rajaonarimampianina affirmed that the 45th Francophone Press Union Conference is a great opportunity for Francophone media agencies to share experiences, propose initiatives or develop future directions, with the goal of moving towards a more dynamic and effective Francophone press.
According to him, in an open and constantly moving world thanks to advanced information and communication technology like today, new economic, political, economic and cultural challenges also appear, requiring the media to innovate and journalists to be clearly aware of their roles and responsibilities.
The economics of journalism in developing countries is a “hot” topic for leaders of Francophone media agencies.
During the 4-day conference, many roundtable discussions and thematic meetings took place.
Delegates focused on discussing issues such as: the causes of success and failure of media in developing countries, investment of private enterprises and media independence; media autonomy in difficult economic context.
At the roundtable discussion “Media in developing countries: causes of success and failure,” Tidiane Dioh, head of media programs at the International Organization of Francophone (OIF), talked about the difficulties of the French-language press in general and the written press in particular; especially in the context of the difficult world economy, the revenue of media agencies has decreased, and the readership of French-language newspapers has increasingly narrowed.
OIF representative Tidiane Dioh cited the case of Le Courrier du Vietnam as a typical example of the effort to rise to an increasingly high position in the French-language press.
According to the Organizing Committee, the conference attracted the participation of 330 delegates representing media organizations, newspapers, radio and television stations from 46 Francophone countries, the largest number of delegates ever./.
