Ky Son: Water shortage in the middle of the rainy season
(Baonghean.vn) - Although it is the middle of the rainy season, many households in Pha Danh (Ky Son) are still living in a state of water shortage. The main cause of this situation is the serious degradation of the public water tank system and water pipes as well as people's awareness of water use.

A water tank of Pha Khom village was badly damaged, surrounded by overgrown trees. |
Pha Khom village has two water tanks, but one has been damaged for many years, so the entire village with nearly 10 households uses one water tank. Mrs. Cut Thi Hoa, 60 years old, Pha Khom village said: "During the dry season, we often live in a state of water shortage, but during the rainy season, there are many days when there is not enough water for bathing and washing."
Previously, Pha Khom had more than 30 households living around the central area of the village, but due to frequent water shortages, 30 households migrated to the streamside area near the water source to live. After a while, these households also built water tanks in their new residence, but after a flood, they were destroyed. Currently, they still rely on stream water.

It was early in the morning but many people in Keo Luc 3 Village were already bringing buckets, basins, cans, etc. to the tank to get water. According to Kha Bun Chan, a resident of Keo Luc 3 Village, the morning is the time when there is a lot of water but the demand for water is low, so people take advantage of the time to get water. In the afternoon, when students finish school, the demand increases, so waiting is very tiring. Many days, when they come late, there is no water to use.

Located in the center of the commune, the two reservoirs of Keo Luc 3 village provide domestic water for 79 households, the Commune People's Committee and Pha Danh Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, so water shortages during the rainy season still occur regularly. Pha Danh Boarding School alone has over 200 boarding students who often suffer from water shortages.

Keo Luc 2 village chief Kha Van Bong said that there are two reservoirs in the village, but over the years both the water pipes and the reservoirs have been severely degraded, so the amount of water reaching the reservoirs is not worth mentioning. He led us along the road, where there is a water pipe from upstream, and many points where water gushed out from cracks in the pipes.

According to Mr. Bong, the water pipeline to the village has dozens of leaks like this. The village often assigns people to buy rubber bands, broken tires, and plastic bags to tie up the leaks, but they break down after a few days, especially on days of heavy rain. In addition, a water collection tank at the source is also seriously degraded, the pipe is broken and washed away by floods, so it cannot collect water into the source tank. Therefore, even though it is the rainy season, people still suffer from water shortages.

Mr. Kha Van Thi - Deputy Secretary of Pha Danh commune said that the water shortage in Pha Danh is most serious in Hoi Nhuc village and Xop Nhuc cluster of Keo Luc 1 village. Because there is no public water tank system, nearly 50 households in Hoi Nhuc village and 38 households in Xop Nhuc cluster have to wade through forests and mountains every day to get water for daily use.
The entire Pha Danh commune has 6 self-flowing domestic water works, with a total of 30 water tanks in 10 villages. However, up to now, more than 2/3 of the water tanks have been abandoned because there is no longer a water supply source. Especially for the villages of Keo Luc 1, Keo Luc 2,... because they are far from the water source, people have to invest in water pipes which is very expensive. Local funding sources are limited, so people here are in dire need of the State's attention and support to overcome the water shortage.
