Many people have the habit of using their phones while going to the toilet. However, experts warn that just 5 minutes of liking and commenting on Facebook on your phone in the bathroom can put you at risk of many health risks.

According to biologist Paul Matewele of London Metropolitan University, toilets, taps, and sinks are full of dangerous disease-causing germs.

The habit of using the phone in the toilet causes many risks of infection.

These include E. coli, which causes intestinal illnesses and urinary tract infections; acinetobacter, which can cause infectious respiratory infections; and C. diff., which causes diarrhea.

According to researchers, the bathroom is generally one of the worst places to use your phone because germs are spread everywhere. Taking your phone into the bathroom is especially dangerous when you constantly touch your phone and then put it on the dining table.

Expert Emily Martin, from the School of Public Health (University of Michigan, USA) said: "People always carry their mobile phones even before washing their hands to do something."

Cell phones alone are dangerous enough to pose a health risk. Sharing a cell phone is not recommended, especially during flu season. The virus can survive on its surface for up to eight hours.

Viruses like the flu die within minutes outside the human body, but survive longer on dry surfaces. MRSA, a common antibiotic-resistant bacterium, can survive on such surfaces for up to nine days.

Health experts have also warned that mobile phones can easily spread viruses because users constantly come into contact with the device's surface.

To prevent the spread of germs, mobile phones should be kept in a pocket or bag where they are protected from contamination. For those who like to 'take selfies' with their phones in the bathroom, health experts advise washing your hands before and after using the toilet. You should also periodically wipe your phone with disinfectant.
