Vietnam's first chip manufacturing 'furnace' is valued at over 290 billion

ICDREC's microchip products and applications - the first chip design unit in Vietnam - are valued at over VND290 billion in intellectual property.

On June 7, the Microchip Design Research and Training Center (ICDREC) announced the pricing of microchip products and applications that the unit has designed and built over the years.

All products are valued at over VND 290 billion by the Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation (Ministry of Science and Technology), including: 8-bit and 32-bit microprocessor chips; peripheral IP cores; digital signal and image processing IP cores; Analog chip IP cores; Mix-signal.

Applications such as electronic electricity meters, journey monitoring devices, RFID application products, lighting systems are also priced.

This result is based on calculations and comparisons from multiple sources by independent experts.

ICDREC Director Ngo Duc Hoang said that the unit has received investments from the state budget (including the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Department of Science and Technology of Ho Chi Minh City) of VND213 billion. Currently, the center has earned VND68 billion from technology transfer and VND31 billion from product manufacturing and equipment supply.

Mr. Hoang acknowledged that the priced microchip products are at low technology, not creating high commercial value. In the coming time, ICDREC will focus on investing in converting some available IP cores to higher value SOTB technology. This is a technology that is widely used in the world and solves the problem of low power.

Mr. Tran Vinh Tuyen - Vice Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee - congratulated ICDREC on its achievements but noted that the unit must keep up with the world's technological flow. "Any technological product is essentially still in the market. If you make a product but do not commercialize it, it is considered a failure," said Mr. Tuyen.

ICDREC is a unit in the Ho Chi Minh City Microchip Industry Development Program - the first to design chips in Vietnam, highly appreciated by the international scientific community. Many ICDREC products are applied in the fields of national security, electronic electricity meters, lighting control systems, journey monitoring, etc.
