After being released from prison, Hong continued his old ways by removing the motorcycle frame and fairing and hiding drugs inside to transport them.

When arrested, this subject gave the reason that his wife left him, he had to take care of his sick mother, and his mentally ill younger brother, so he agreed to transport drugs for hire to earn money.

Le Van Hong (45 years old), residing in Tri Le commune, Que Phong district, is the eldest child in a family of 3 siblings. After finishing secondary school, Hong decided to drop out and earn a living as a freelancer. After that, Hong married a woman 1 year younger than him, and they have 1 child together.

Hong confided that although they were not divorced, his wife had left and rarely contacted them. The child then went to the South to work and live, so there was no one left in the house. In recent years, Hong has taken on the responsibility of taking care of his elderly mother and mentally ill younger brother.

Instead of trying harder to earn a living and support his family, this man got involved in drugs. Because of his mistakes, Hong was sent to prison time after time.

In 2018, Le Van Hong was sentenced to 36 months in prison for illegal drug trafficking. Thanks to his good behavior, Hong was released from prison early. But after a short time, this man made the same mistake again. This time, Hong transporteddrugrent to others

Accordingly, around the beginning of April 2024, when Hong was cutting grass on the roadside, she met a Mong man (unknown background and address). This man asked Hong to transport 1 cake of heroin and 8 packages of pink drugs from Tri Le commune to Nghia Khanh commune, Nghia Dan district for 20 million VND. Faced with the attractive invitation, Hong nodded in agreement.

On the afternoon of April 12, Hong took his younger brother’s motorbike and removed the front frame cover near the gas tank to hide a brick of heroin. Hong then removed the side covers of the motorbike to hide the remaining packages of drugs.

After carefully disguising himself, Hong drove away. However, after only a short distance, fearing that the police would stop him for inspection, Hong changed his travel plan. He hired a pickup truck to transport both himself and his motorbike to Nghia Dan district. However, when Hong was about to deliver the drugs, he was arrested by the police. The evidence of the case was more than 523 grams of drugs.

The carrier's excuse

With the above actions, Le Van Hong was prosecuted and brought to trial for the crime of Illegally transporting narcotics. In front of the witness stand, the defendant admitted all the crimes. Hong admitted to transporting narcotics for the profit of 20 million VND. However, this defendant said that he had not received this payment before being arrested.

Responding to the questions of the jury, the defendant gave many reasons to justify his crime. Hong explained his family's difficult circumstances, having to take care of his sick mother and mentally ill younger brother. "My father passed away, my wife left me a long time ago, I have to take care of two sick people, my younger brother and my mother, alone. My younger brother has a mental illness and has to take medication continuously, which costs a lot of money. Because I was so poor, when someone hired me, I agreed," Hong told the court.

However, the judge immediately questioned the defendant's justification, saying that his brother's illness was covered by insurance and the State was providing medical expenses. Furthermore, the defendant's use of such reasons to commit illegal acts was unacceptable.

At this time, Hong lowered his head and mumbled the reason that his younger brother was mentally affected due to previous excessive drug use. Therefore, when he went to the doctor, he was not accepted to receive medication support. “Because of drugs, my younger brother is no longer lucid, and I myself am now in trouble with the law because of drugs. I know I have done many wrong things, I ask the court to consider reducing my sentence so that I can soon have the opportunity to return to my family,” the defendant told the panel of judges.

During the deliberation, Hong looked down many times to look for relatives but saw no one. Then Hong confided that before, his son who was working in the South had promised to come visit his father when the trial was over. But today, for some reason, the son could not come. No relatives came to comfort him, making the defendant's face clearly show sadness.

For the crime of Illegally transporting narcotics, the panel of judges, after considering aggravating and mitigating circumstances, sentenced the defendant Le Van Hong to 20 years in prison. That is the price the “transporter” must pay for his greed and disregard for the law. But perhaps the sentence that hurt Hong the most was losing the opportunity to be with his sick mother and sick brother for a long time.
