'The ostentatious lifestyle of officials undermines investor confidence'

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc expressed his concern about the ostentatious, wasteful lifestyle that causes many negative reactions among some officials and party members in some mountainous provinces.

On July 17, speaking at the Son La province investment promotion conference, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that at the national and local levels, the issue of promoting trade and investment is very important.

In that spirit, the Prime Minister welcomed and highly appreciated Son La for its good preparation for the conference. Thanks to the promotion, a new wave of investment from Vietnamese and foreign investors has come to the province, including large domestic and international corporations.

However, in front of representatives of the Northwestern provinces, the Prime Minister expressed: "I am very concerned when hearing information about the ostentatious, wasteful, and offensive lifestyle of a number of cadres and party members in some of our mountainous provinces."

The Prime Minister assessed that it was these officials who were undermining investors' confidence in the local business environment, affecting people's livelihoods and overall development.

Reiterating the message stated at the recent Hanoi investment promotion conference, the Prime Minister emphasized to the leaders of communes, wards, towns and cities of Son La that "all grassroots apparatus must change sensitively, promptly and deeply with the decisions from the Government and the Central Government".

The Prime Minister requested ministries, branches and localities to implement the spirit of a creative government in recent times, "not only in Hanoi, but also at all levels and branches in the system. First of all, creativity must be through action and that action must have concrete results, especially at the grassroots level".

According to the Prime Minister, creation does not mean just looking at difficulties to deal with them, leaving it to fate, but must have the spirit to overcome oneself as has been happening in some localities recently, including Son La. "To create, one must have faith, know how to be creative, and promote the unique and distinctive features of the locality," the Prime Minister emphasized.

Recalling the words of the late General Secretary Nguyen Van Linh, “Save yourself before God saves you,” the Prime Minister raised the question: How to save yourself and set out some requirements for Son La in particular and the most difficult provinces of the Northwest in general?

The Head of Government said that first of all, we must know how to maintain and protect border security, social order and safety. We must pay more attention to both traditional and non-traditional security challenges. Among them, poverty is one of the most complex causes and challenges to security threats in many places.

“If we let our people reach a dead end, without a minimum standard of living, it will lead to illegal acts. To ensure security, we must fundamentally solve the lives of our people. Do not let bad people take advantage of our people's difficult lives to cause insecurity,” the Prime Minister noted.

At the conference, witnessed by the Prime Minister, Son La province granted investment policy decisions and investment registration certificates to 26 projects with a total investment of VND8,560 billion; signed memorandums of understanding with investors of 17 projects with a total investment of VND14,932 billion.
