Floods continue to pour in, many hydroelectric reservoirs continue to discharge water

Due to the impact of storms and rains, 19 hydroelectric reservoirs across the country were forced to open floodgates to ensure flood prevention capacity and safety for downstream areas.

Floods came in succession, forcing many lakes to release water.

On the morning of September 30, the amount of water flowing from upstream to hydroelectric reservoirs increased sharply. To reduce pressure and ensure flood prevention capacity, 19 hydroelectric reservoirs across the country had to simultaneously open their discharge gates, contributing to cutting and reducing floods downstream.

In the North, Tuyen Quang hydroelectric reservoir opened two deep discharge gates with a total flow of more than 1,847 m³/s, of which water discharged through the spillway accounted for 1,246 m³/s.

Thac Ba Lake also discharged more than 1,284 m³/s through two surface discharge gates. Notably, Hoa Binh Lake opened two gates from the evening of September 29, with a total discharge volume of 5,705 m³/s, almost equivalent to the amount of water flowing into the lake.

In Thanh Hoa, Trung Son Lake had to open 5 spillway gates, with a total flow of more than 1,110 m³/s.

Nghe An has Ban Ve lake with one gate open, discharging 356 m³/s while water flowing into the lake is up to more than 2,000 m³/s.

In Quang Tri, the hydroelectric reservoir of the same name opens a spillway with a flow rate of 49 m³/s.

Not only the North and Central regions, many hydroelectric reservoirs in the Central Highlands and the South Central region also discharged floodwaters, such as Song Bung 2, Song Bung 4, Song Ba Ha, An Khe, Se San 3A, Se San 4, Pleikrong, Se San 3, Ialy, Buon Tua Srah, Srepok 3, Buon Kuop and Don Duong.

According to Vietnam Electricity (EVN), despite simultaneous flood discharge, all hydropower projects under EVN and Power Generation Corporations are still safe. Operation is carried out in accordance with procedures, both to prevent flooding downstream and to keep dams safe amid the impact of storm No. 10.
