MC Dai Nghia in trouble with more than 800 million in charity money

October 21, 2016 16:25

The story about MC Dai Nghia's charity work draws a big lesson about charity work, money should be clearly separated between public and private.

Mistake of combining charity and personal money

On October 18, comedian Dai Nghia announced that he did not disclose the account of the fund to support people in Central Vietnam, because he combined the charity fund and his personal money into the same account.

Specifically, he wrote: “Someone asked Nghia to make a statement of his account, but Nghia did not do so. Do you know why? If anyone has followed Nghia's activities up to now, they will know that Nghia has a total of 7 regular charity funds including: Building bridges and wells, Building roads, Building houses, Means of livelihood, Encouraging education, Treating and saving people, Building pagodas, and 2 irregular funds: Phat Quang and Central Region.

Nghia only has one account number that you all transfer to the funds. When Nghia receives money from you, he says which fund to contribute to, Nghia has to write down that fund separately so as not to confuse the money and the purpose of your contribution.

Now Nghia is campaigning for the Central Region Fund. If you want Nghia to show you his account statement, how can you do that when the money in his account is from 9 charity funds and Nghia's personal money, not just the Central Region Fund."

Caught in controversy for pooling public and private money together

Faced with this ambiguity, netizens expressed dissatisfaction and doubt about the integrity of the charity fund to support the people of Central Vietnam that he initiated. Because according to what Dai Nghia informed everyone, the amount of support was very large, up to more than 800 million and continued to increase.

Facebook user Dong Phong Lang Tu opposes the practice of pooling public and private money: “That is the rule that money must be clear, brother, and especially charity money, donations... must also be clear. In the countryside, even if people contribute money to charity to build sewers and bridges directly, it is also clearly recorded on paper.

Whether it is 10 thousand or 50 thousand or 1 million, it is the same. After each project, if they have any left over, they will print a thank you note and send it to your home, then there will never be any scandal. And I think you should divide it into funds and accounts, which will be clearer and easier to control. If you combine so many funds together, suspicion and scandal are inevitable. Even though it is difficult to explain whether you are clean or not!

Another comment from a friend named Nguyen Huu Tri expressed: “I also know that Mr. Nghia does it out of his heart. But if you guys keep protecting him like that, he will get into trouble with auditing and charity principles. When the government inspects, things will be much more complicated. Mr. Nghia should think about this risk and from tomorrow, separate the types of accounts clearly. I hope he will calm down."

Separate charity accounts

During the period of suspicion and scandal, Dai Nghia diligently updated on Facebook the names of the accounts that transferred money to the fund every day. He posted more than 30 printed photos of account statements that benefactors sent from October 16 to 19, and many people encouraged him and expressed their trust in his charity fund.

After realizing the inadequacies and controversy of mixing public and private funds, actor Dai Nghia decided to separate his personal account and combine 9 charity funds into one.

He wrote: “As Nghia shared with you yesterday, Nghia has separated his personal money and combined all the money from previous accounts into one. So from now on, Nghia will no longer call the accounts by their individual names, but will just call them our An Vui account. And in this account, we will help with many items. When there is a need for something, or someone’s situation, we just withdraw money from the account and send it there. An Vui account will bring joy to everyone. Life is inherently full of suffering, so let’s work together to reduce each other’s suffering, guys.”
