Auto experts share tips to help save fuel effectively and significantly reduce operating costs in times of skyrocketing fuel prices.

In the most recent gasoline price adjustment on April 17, gasoline prices in Vietnam continued to increase, RON 95-III gasoline "jumped" to VND 25,230/liter, an increase of VND 410/liter compared to the previous adjustment session. On January 4, 2024, the price of RON 95-III gasoline was only VND 21,910/liter. Thus, gasoline prices have increased by VND 3,320/liter since the beginning of the year. Also in the period from January 4 to April 17, the price of 0.001SV Diesel oil also increased from VND 20,340/liter to VND 22,050/liter.

According to Mr. D. (living in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City): "My VinFast Lux SA only cost about 1.75 million VND to fill up 80 liters of gasoline in early January. At that time, the price of RON 95-III gasoline was 21,910 VND/liter. I just filled up 80 liters of gasoline on April 18 but it cost 2.02 million VND, an increase of about 270,000 VND compared to before. The increase in gasoline prices has also caused my gasoline costs to increase "dizzily". As someone who uses a car to go to work every day, the increase in gasoline prices has also greatly affected the operating costs of Mr. D. in particular and car users in general.

A famous car expert in the UK has shared with The Sun website tips and tricks to help drivers operate their cars most effectively, save fuel and significantly reduce operating costs for the car.

Most car users do not pay much attention to adjusting the gear and watching the engine speed on the dashboard when driving, but this is an important factor in saving fuel. Experts advise that the most economical driving method is to regularly use the car in the highest gear and maintain a steady speed.

Changing the habit of driving in the highest gear and maintaining a steady speed not only helps save fuel but also helps the engine run more durably. Moreover, significantly limiting situations of pressing the accelerator and accelerating too quickly can help reduce fuel consumption by up to 20%. Instead, we need to change the habit of applying force with the accelerator, pressing the accelerator gently and slowly to help the car move faster and faster.

Many drivers are unaware of how shifting gears affects fuel consumption. Driving efficiently is not just about which gear the driver is using, but also about how the gears are managed based on speed and keeping the engine rpm reasonable.

When driving a manual transmission car with a gasoline engine, the driver should shift gears before the engine speed reaches 2,500 rpm. For diesel engines, the driver should shift gears before the engine speed reaches 2,000 rpm.

For vehicles using automatic transmission, most sensor chips will help automatically shift gears within a pre-calculated rpm range. Users can also manually intervene via the paddle shifters behind the steering wheel or switch to manual mode at the control gear lever.

When traveling on the highway or open national highway, the driver should also move at a steady speed, shift to the highest gear and adjust the engine speed to the lowest level, usually around 1,500-1,800 rpm. This is an effective tip to help save fuel that has been recorded on a small/medium sized MPV model with a consumption of 4.3L/100km.

In times of high gasoline prices, applying tips and tricks to operate a fuel-efficient vehicle will also help car users save a relatively large amount of money.
