Also according to the QS Rankings report, Cambridge University (UK) for the first time in more than a decade has fallen out of the list of the world's top 3 universities.
The UK's highest-ranked university has dropped from third to fourth place, the lowest ranking Cambridge has placed since the rankings were published in 2004, according to the list.
Alongside Cambridge, a number of top UK universities have fallen in the rankings in 2016. Prestigious schools such as Cambridge, Oxford, UCL and Imperial College London remain in the top 10.
Ben Sowter, director of research at QS, said issues related to immigration policy and long-term funding had affected the rankings of UK universities.
Mr Sowter also said that “the ability to find jobs and retain young talent around the world appears to be damaging the reputation of the UK higher education sector”.
However, in terms of cities, London continues to have the highest number of universities in the top 40 in the world with eight.
