Every morning I earn 500,000 VND from "picking" goose eggs.

Mr. Pham Van Ket's family in hamlet 10, Khanh Nhac commune, Yen Khanh district (Ninh Binh) started raising geese for eggs in 2008, and has been doing so for nearly a decade now. That period of time is enough for him to tell us about the ups and downs of the geese egg-raising business.

Mr. Ket said that in the first years, his family only raised a few dozen laying geese to have pocket money, but later realized that raising geese was economically efficient, so his family decided to invest in depth and expand the geese raising model. Although he has been involved in the geese raising business for ten years, his family only raises about 500 geese, and when there are many, it is only close to 1,000 geese.

Thanks to raising geese for eggs to sell, Mr. Pham Van Ket's family pockets half a million dong every day.

Any livestock industry cannot avoid price fluctuations, and so can the business of raising laying geese. There are years when geese eggs cost up to 12,000 VND each, so there is nothing more profitable. If you raise about 500 mother geese, you can easily earn a few million VND per day.

But there was a time when the price of eggs dropped to 2,000 VND per egg, so losing nearly a million VND per day was normal. Feeling that the price of eggs could not go up, he could sell duck meat to avoid losses, and the price of laying ducks was always higher than the price of young ducks, so Mr. Ket calculated that he would not lose money.

“That is why I only raise around 500 mother geese, so that when prices are difficult I can manage and switch to selling geese for meat. If I raise too many and the egg price fluctuates sharply, the loss will be greater,” Mr. Ket confided.

Mr. Ket's family invested quite thoroughly in the duck-laying barn. The barn floor is made of mesh, so cleaning the barn is very convenient.

After many years of working in the duck farming business, his family is currently raising more than 500 ducks. Of which, there are about 400 female ducks and about 100 male ducks.

With these hens, his family collects on average more than 300 eggs a day, which are sold for between 5,000 and 6,000 VND each. After deducting all expenses, his family makes a profit of half a million VND each day.

“Raising geese for eggs requires very low investment costs and is quite effective. This is one of the ways to get rich in the countryside. Just raising a few hundred geese can earn several hundred thousand a day,” Mr. Ket shared.

Traders buy duck eggs at home at prices ranging from 5,000-6,000 VND/egg.

Sharing with reporters of Dan Viet electronic newspaper, Mr. Ket said that raising laying geese is not much different from raising commercial geese but brings higher income efficiency. On average, geese start to lay eggs after about 6 months of raising, and it is not until the 8th month that geese lay eggs regularly, with large eggs and a high laying rate of about 70% and eggs can be exploited continuously for about 8 consecutive months.

According to Mr. Ket, unlike commercial geese farming, the good thing about raising geese for eggs is that after the eggs are harvested, the parent geese will be sold as meat geese at a very high price, on average about 80,000 VND/1 kg, always 20-30 thousand VND higher than the normal price of meat geese.

"If calculated, the money from selling the duck carcasses is almost enough to cover the cost of raising the ducks from young until they lay eggs, so when the ducks lay eggs, the money from selling the eggs each day only needs to be deducted from the money for feed and other expenses for that day to get the profit for that day," Mr. Ket revealed.

Sharing the secret to raising healthy geese, Mr. Ket said that geese are a bit more difficult to raise than other geese, so during the raising process, the barn must always be clean, and there must be a swimming pool and a place to sunbathe for the geese.
