Eating processed foods is not good for your kidney health. You should also exercise, reduce stress and quit smoking.

“The kidneys play an important role in regulating fluid control and cleansing the body,” explains Dr. George Hart, an American nephrologist. “They also maintainhealthof bones and managing our red blood cell counts”.

An estimated 36 million Americans are living with kidney disease, but 90 percent don't know they have it because they don't have symptoms until it's more advanced, the doctor added. Kidney disease is more common in women than men, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Common risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, or a family history. Past kidney damage and old age can also play a role.

The role of the kidney

Kidney dysfunction can lead to serious health problems, which is why it is important to take care of your kidneys through a healthy lifestyle and regular medical checkups, Dr. Hart stressed.

“The kidneys are essential to our overall health because they filter the blood and remove waste products, excess fluids, and electrolytes from the body. This process controls the balance of sodium, potassium, calcium, and phosphorus, which keep the body functioning properly,” explains Dr. Hart.

According toParade, the kidneys also regulate the body's fluid balance by controlling the amount of water and salt. This contributes to maintaining blood pressure, cell function, and overall hydration: “The kidneys filter waste products such as urea, creatinine, and ammonia from the blood and excrete them as urine, and they also remove a variety of toxins, drugs, and foreign substances from the blood, preventing them from accumulating in the body.”

Habit number one for healthy kidneys

If you're looking to maintain or improve your kidney health, Dr. Hart recommends avoidingprocessed food“Limiting processed foods, too much salt, and sugary drinks is important,” explains the expert. “Skipping these foods will reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, both of which are risk factors for kidney disease.”

Other habits that are good for your kidneys

Exercise is another helpful habit. “Engaging in regular physical activity helps you maintain a healthy weight, control your blood pressure, and improve your circulation, all of which contribute to kidney health,” says Dr. Hart. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week.

Chronic stress also affects your overall health, including your kidney function. “Practice stress-reduction techniques like meditation, deep breathing, yoga, or spending time in nature,” Dr. Hart advises.

Additionally, some medications can potentially harm your kidneys. “Make sure you are getting regular medical advice when using any medication,” Dr. Hart says. “Regular checkups can help detect and manage any potential kidney problems early.”
