Just after each rain, not to mention floods, a large area of productive land in Bu beach is eroded and cracked. |
As one of the households directly affected by the landslide, Mr. Tran Huu Ba - residing in Lam Dinh hamlet, Thanh Giang commune, sighed: "For the past 3 years, I have been contracted to grow crops on more than 1 hectare of Bu beach land of the commune. But every year, the land is lost due to landslides, but the worst was the flood in April last year; my house lost more than 5 sao. A few days ago, another 750 m was lost.2again".

Cracks wider than 10 cm appeared. |
Mr. Ba calculated that last year's flood hit the middle of the peanut crop, which was in the flowering and bean-growing period, so his family lost more than 5 sao of peanuts. On average, each sao yields 1 hectare of 1.5 quintals of peanuts; with 5 sao of peanuts, his family lost more than 16 million VND. Not to mention the cost of seeds, fertilizers, and care. "The economic loss is inevitable, the land for production is also lost. At this rate, in just a few years, the Bu beach will be eroded, and people will not know where to get land to work" - Mr. Ba worried.
Mr. Tran Huu Sy - Head of Agriculture of Thanh Giang Commune said that the Bu beach area has a total area of 23 hectares, serving the production of more than 200 local households. But so far, 8 hectares have been eroded, only 15 hectares of land are still in production. With the continuous heavy rain and rising river water, there is a risk of another 3-4 hectares being eroded in the coming days.

Thanh Giang commune alone had more than 8 hectares of production land swallowed by Lam river. |
"There are two main reasons for this serious erosion. One is due to the flow law of erosion on one side and deposition on the other. The other is due to the widespread exploitation of sand and gravel on the Lam River, changing the flow direction. To overcome this situation, the locality has planted reeds along the Lam River to prevent erosion, however, this solution is still not effective" - Mr. Sy informed.
