NATO is concerned that when Donald Trump takes office as US President, he will reduce the US military presence in Europe, Spiegel reported.

Quân đội Mỹ tham gia cuộc tập trận chung NATO.
US troops participate in joint NATO exercises.

According to the newspaper's data, that is one of the scenarios described in the report of the General Staff of the Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, expressing great concern about the American billionaire winning the election. "Nowhere is the concern about Trump being elected President greater than in the NATO Alliance.

Now this bloc, as Spiegel learned, will move the summit meeting date that was originally planned for the spring.

Stoltenberg appears to have assumed that the US president would be Hillary Clinton, and at the spring summit he is set to congratulate Clinton on her election victory, Spiegel noted.

However, after Trump’s victory, NATO had to decide to postpone the summit until the summer. In addition to recalling the US troops, Stoltenberg’s staff also considered another potential scenario: that Trump could change his agreement to rotate US troops in Eastern Europe.

The most “favorable” scenario mentioned in the staff report is based on the argument that the new US President might simply insist on European countries increasing their own defense spending.
