NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the aid package approved on June 15 aims to help Ukraine "establish a more effective defense and security structure" and strengthen the control of the Ukrainian armed forces in civilian areas.

The US-led NATO alliance has supported Ukraine in many areas, including improving logistics, defense equipment and rehabilitating wounded soldiers.

NATO officials said the expanded aid package includes guidance on counter-insurgency systems, booby traps, other explosive devices, and communications strategies.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is expected to attend the NATO summit in Warsaw next month to discuss the next steps of the aid package.
