According to StartCom Chairman John Hayten, it was the first visit by a NATO chief to the command headquarters in 54 years. The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance stressed "the importance of StratCom for the security of all NATO countries". In addition, Mr. Stoltenberg spoke about "the growing problem of nuclear proliferation."
“After the end of the Cold War, we all thought that nuclear deterrence would become less important, but now we see that it actually became more important,” he said.
In addition, the NATO Secretary General spoke about the need to maintain a high level of nuclear deterrence due to Russia's growing power.
"The old nuclear powers, especially Russia, are modernizing their nuclear capabilities and in this regard, NATO needs to maintain credible and robust deterrence capabilities. Of course, nuclear forces are an integral part of all allies," Stoltenberg concluded.
