Russia accuses US missile shield of violating nuclear treaty
Russia believes that the US and NATO's plan to deploy components of the "missile shield" system close to Russia's borders is aimed at directly threatening Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry on May 12 accused the US of recently installing a missile defense system in Europe as a violation of the nuclear treaty, and warned that it would take appropriate countermeasures.

The statement came after the US activated an $800 million missile shield in Romania amid tense relations between Russia and the West. Russia believes that the US and NATO's plan to deploy components of the "missile shield" system in Eastern European countries, close to Russia's borders, is aimed at directly threatening Russia.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said: “We consider the deployment of the US missile defense system in Romania to be a violation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty signed by the two countries in 1987. Russia has repeatedly pointed out the dangers of developing a missile defense system in the region in the current context, but our concerns have been ignored. Therefore, we will take military and technical measures in response.”
Russia also stated that the US and NATO's implementation of the above plan would undermine Russia's security and force the country to take countermeasures to prevent this threat. The commander of Russia's strategic missile forces recently announced that the Russian military is developing extremely powerful ballistic missiles (ICBMs) capable of "penetrating" any of the most advanced US missile defense systems today./.
