The Joint Sea-2016 exercise involved ships, submarines, aircraft, helicopters and marines from both countries.
According to the Chinese navy, the exercises include "island occupation", anti-submarine, rescue, defense... The marines will practice live-fire, landing and island defense.
Beijing described it as the largest joint exercise ever held by the Chinese and Russian navies. Last year, the exercise was held in the Sea of Japan and the Mediterranean.
According to the Chinese navy, this is an annual exercise and is not aimed at any specific country.
The exercise was carried out despite escalating tensions in the region stemming from Beijing’s unreasonable claims of sovereignty. In July 2016, the Hague Arbitration Court (Netherlands) issued a ruling rejecting China’s claims in the East Sea and criticizing the country’s environmental destruction there.
China has firmly rejected the international court's findings and previously refused to participate in the arbitration.
