First 6 months of the year lost 242 billion VND

Reporting at the meeting, the representative of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: In the first 6 months of 2020, the weather and natural disasters in the province continued to be complicated. Specifically, the area was affected by 15 cold spells, 5 heat waves, 22 tornadoes and flash floods. The consequences killed 3 people, collapsed 35 houses, damaged 2,355 houses, damaged 2,897 hectares of rice, estimated damage of 242 billion VND.

Regarding dike management, Nghe An has 68 km of level III dikes (Lam left dike). Currently, level III dikes have not been classified, and investment and repair costs are low.

Although natural disasters are complicated, the work of natural disaster prevention and control continues to receive serious attention and direction from the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial People's Committee. The Provincial Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue together with sectors, localities and units have deployed drastically and synchronously, promoting well the "4 on-the-spot" to prepare well for prevention, response and overcoming consequences. Thanks to that, many losses in human lives and property have been limited.

Speaking at the meeting, comrade Tran Quang Hoai - Director General of the General Department of Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said: Nghe An is often affected by all types of natural disasters, therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the Steering Committee for natural disaster prevention and control and search and rescue and develop specific plans for each member; Develop scenarios for all types of natural disasters.

Continue to review to develop dike protection plans, develop plans for vulnerable dike sections. It is necessary to assign responsibility for reservoir management to local authorities, develop plans for reservoir maintenance and upgrading, and develop safety scenarios for downstream areas. Nghe An often experiences flash floods, so it is necessary to propagate to people how to prevent them, check at-risk areas to evacuate people to safe places...

Meeting Conclusion,Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Hoang Nghia Hieu acknowledged the opinions of the working group of the General Department of Irrigation, the province will seriously absorb and implement well the work of natural disaster prevention and control. Determining that natural disasters are becoming more and more complicated, the Provincial People's Committee requires departments, branches and localities to proactively respond to natural disasters, thereby minimizing damage.

The province will develop specific plans to evacuate people from dangerous areas, strengthen forecasting and warning of natural disasters; speed up the repair and upgrading of systems, dykes, lakes and dams; strengthen the management of ships and boats, and promote the "4 on-site" motto in preventing and combating natural disasters.

The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested the General Department of Irrigation to propose to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to invest funds to implement the project of upgrading the sea dyke system in the area; Review and classify the dyke system. At the same time, submit to the Government a regulation on coordination with the Lao Government on providing flood information on the Ca River basin on the Lao side so that Nghe An province can promptly respond during the flood season.
