(Baonghean.vn) - Although the total pig herd in the province is large, with over 1 million pigs, the vaccination rate against African swine fever is very low. This is one of the reasons for the outbreak and spread of the disease in recent times.

African swine feverAfrican swine fever is re-emerging in Nghe An. Many localities have outbreaks, with large numbers of infected and culled pigs. Vaccination against African swine fever is considered a fundamental solution to prevent the disease, but to date, the vaccination rate is very low.

Specifically, according to statistics from the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, the province currently has over 1 million pigs. However, by the end of December 2023, only 1,258 doses of African swine fever vaccine had been vaccinated for 1,258 pigs aged 4 weeks or older in 4 districts: Yen Thanh 488 pigs, Que Phong 600 pigs, Quy Chau 150 pigs, and Hung Nguyen 20 pigs. Currently, according to assessments, the pigs after vaccination are growing and developing normally.

However, in districts with complicated developments of African swine fever such as Anh Son, Thanh Chuong, Nghi Loc, Dien Chau... pigs have not yet been vaccinated with this vaccine.

The reason for the vaccination rateVaccineThe low rate of African swine fever is due to the fact that this vaccine is only injected into qualified pigs. Specifically, the AVAC ASF LIVE vaccine of AVAC Vietnam Joint Stock Company is used for pigs from 4 weeks of age and older; the NAVET-ASFVAC vaccine of NAVETCO Veterinary Medicine Joint Stock Company is for pigs from 8 to 10 weeks of age; these vaccines are not injected into sows and boars.

For large farms that want to vaccinate, they must ensure conditions such as ensuring biosafety in animal husbandry, appropriate ages for each type of vaccine, having healthy pigs, and no clinical signs of infectious diseases...

In addition, the current price of African swine fever vaccine is more than 60,000 VND/dose. People who want to vaccinate their livestock will have to pay for it themselves, which is considered a rather high price for livestock farmers.

Ms. Phan Thi Thanh in Dien Nguyen commune, Dien Chau district said: My family has a herd of 11 pigs, if we vaccinate the whole herd, it will cost over 600,000 VND. This is quite a high cost for purely farming households like us...

In fact, for households with a total herd of less than 10 animals, it is still acceptable to spend money to vaccinate animals. For households with large numbers of animals such as farms, ranches, with the number of animals up to hundreds, spending a large amount of money on vaccination makes many owners have to consider and calculate carefully.

Nghe An Provincial People's Committee has issued Official Dispatch No. 7296/UBND-NN on "strengthening disease prevention and control and the use of African swine fever vaccines".

Accordingly, localities will consider and decide to use African swine fever vaccine to prevent and control the disease based on the livestock and disease situation in the locality. Strengthen information and propaganda work widely in various forms, with appropriate content and the situation of using African swine fever vaccine so that people know.

Select and count livestock farms that need African swine fever vaccination that meet all conditions, compile the list and send it to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine to connect with vaccine suppliers in a timely manner.

Please note that during the vaccination process, it is possible that the pigs have been infected with the African swine fever virus and other pathogens, but have not yet shown clinical symptoms. When the pigs are vaccinated, they may react, develop the disease, die, and have to be treated for the outbreak and destroyed according to regulations.

Report the results of using African swine fever vaccine (if any), as well as promptly send a complete and accurate written document reflecting difficulties and problems to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine for coordination in handling.

Closely monitor the African swine fever vaccination process at the facility, ensure early detection and timely handling of unexpected risks that may occur when using African swine fever vaccine. Coordinate with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine to collect samples for evaluation after vaccination.
