The name Nghe An dates back to 1030 under the reign of Ly Thai Tong. At that time, it was called Nghe An Chau Trai, then changed to Nghe An Trai, then Nghe An Phu, Nghe An Thua Tuyen. In 1490, King Le Thanh Tong changed the name from Nghe An Thua Tuyen to Nghe An region (abbreviated as Nghe region) at the same time as other administrative units at that time such as: Kinh Bac region, Son Nam region, Dong region, Doai region, Thanh Hoa region, Lang Son region... In 1831, under the reign of King Minh Mang, Nghe region was divided into two provinces, Nghe An and Ha Tinh. In 1976, the two provinces merged into the larger province of Nghe Tinh. In 1991, it was divided into Nghe An and Ha Tinh as it is today.

According to the leader of the Department of Culture and Sports, the Department has worked with organizations and individuals related to the art program to celebrate the 990th anniversary of Nghe An's name. In addition, the Department is also developing the overall program and script for the ceremony.

According to the plan of the Provincial People's Committee, the 990th anniversary of Nghe An's title will be held at Ho Chi Minh Square, Vinh City on April 11, 2020. After the ceremony, there will be an art program to welcome with the theme "990 years of Nghe An's title" and a low-altitude fireworks display lasting 15 minutes.
Concluding the meeting, Comrade Bui Dinh Long requested the Steering Committee members to perform well the assigned tasks. The Department of Culture and Sports is responsible for coordinating with organizations and individuals to develop a commemorative program that must reflect the strong identity of the people of Nghe An. For the flag-raising ceremony and fireworks display at the ceremony, it is necessary to choose an organization method suitable to the local situation...
