Mr. Pham Van Thanh - in charge of agriculture in Hung Dong commune said: "Fearing that storm No. 4 would make landfall, vegetable growers had to clean up and dismantle the net houses, membranes, and tarpaulins covering the vegetables. Because heavy rain and strong winds would damage the net houses, causing significant damage (about 15 million VND/sao), farmers accepted that the vegetables would be damaged. Heavy rain, water could not drain in time, and there was no roof, so the vegetables were crushed, rotten, and could not be harvested."

Many areas of winter crops that have just been planted are submerged in water. Photo: Thanh Phuc |
It is forecasted that in the coming days, there will continue to be heavy rains combined with many hydroelectric reservoirs releasing floodwaters, which can easily cause widespread flooding. Therefore, for vegetable growing areas, when the weather clears up, farmers need to harvest quickly to minimize damage; for vegetables and winter crops that have just been planted, after flooding, the roots will be clogged and rot, so it is necessary to promptly clear the flow, drain the water, apply care measures to stimulate root growth and prevent pests and diseases.
Techniques for caring for flooded vegetables after heavy rain
- Clear the flow, dredge the beds, ditches, dig holes at both ends of the field to drain water above and below the surface as quickly as possible...
- If the weather after the rain is sunny and windy, you need to lift the film near the base of the tree to expose the soil for the roots to be ventilated, the water will evaporate faster and fungi and bacteria will not grow and cause much damage to the roots. You should add a small amount of cold wood ash near the base of the tree so that the ash can absorb water to the surface quickly.
- For newly planted vegetable areas, lightly hoe and break the surface of the bed to help the plants recover.
- Stimulates root growth and limits plant diseasesby: Using superphosphate (1.5 - 2 kg/sao) or specialized fertilizers for root growth (according to recommended dosage) watering 10 - 15 cm from the base of the tree to stimulate root growth and better recovery. During this stage, absolutely do not use a lot of inorganic nitrogen fertilizer to fertilize the tree, it is necessary to pay attention to balanced fertilization as a proactive measure to prevent pests and diseases.
- After the rain stops, take advantage of the dry weather when the leaves and stems of plants are no longer waterlogged, so spray pesticides on the leaves and roots of vegetables.
