Nghe An: Chayote prices plummet, fruit falls all over the garden
(Baonghean.vn) - During this year's chayote harvest, the vegetable growing area of Quynh Lien, Hoang Mai Town (Nghe An) had a good harvest, with much higher productivity than last year, but the selling price has decreased significantly; currently, chayote imported to traders is only 1,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hien in village 4, Quynh Lien commune (Hoang Mai town) said: This time his family planted chayote.2 hectares, planted since July last year, entered the harvest season in January...
Before Tet, chayote was sold to traders at the garden for 4,000 VND/kg, but now in the main harvest season, the price has dropped sharply, to only 600 - 1,000 VND/kg; with this price, Mr. Hien does not have enough money to pay people to harvest, so he has to let the fruit fall.

With an area of 1.5 hectares of chayote, when dozens of tons of chayote fell all over the garden, Mr. Nguyen Huu Lien (in Quynh Lien) estimated the damage to be nearly 50 million VND/ha.
According to Ms. Nguyen Oanh - Head of Phuong Lien Vegetable Consumption Cooperative, in the area there are nearly 20 establishments purchasing vegetables and fruits for farmers; it is estimated that every day hundreds of tons of vegetables are transported for consumption to the provinces and exported to China, Laos...
This year the weather is favorable, there are many vegetables, chayote cannot be exported so the price has dropped, this is really difficult for farmers when the selling price is not enough to cover the harvest.

Mr. Ho Ngoc Tang - Chairman of Quynh Lien Commune People's Committee said: The whole commune has 305 hectares of vegetable cultivation, of which 80 hectares are used to grow chayote.
