Nghe An: Implementing a project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions worth 2.194 million USD

(Baonghean.vn) - The Sustainable Forest Management Project, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from efforts to reduce deforestation and degradation of natural forests, and more effectively manage production forests in seven provinces, including Nghe An.

On the afternoon of December 6, the Provincial People's Committee held a meeting on "Implementing the first year's action plan of the Sustainable Forest Management Component in 2021. The second year's action plan in 2022 of the Technical Support Project "Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Conservation (VFBC)" in Nghe An province". Attending the meeting were Mr. Vu Van Hung - Deputy Head of the Central Forestry Project Management Board and representatives of the VFBC.

On Nghe An province side, there were comrade Hoang Nghia Hieu - Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and relevant departments and branches.

According to the report of the Technical Assistance Project “Sustainable Forest Management and Biodiversity Conservation (VFBC)”: This project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The project is implemented with two components: Sustainable Forest Management Component and Biodiversity Conservation Component. In Nghe An, this project implements the sustainable forest management component, with a total capital of about 2.194 million USD (equivalent to 50,864 million VND).

The Project implementation period in Nghe An is 6 years, from 2021 to 2026. The project is implemented throughout the province, with priority given to a number of districts with large forest areas including: Tuong Duong, Con Cuong,Que Phongand Quy Chau.

The Sustainable Forest Management Component is implemented in Nghe An, the Project activities are carried out as follows: Strengthening law enforcement against violations in the forestry sector. Developing agricultural and forestry product price chains, supporting conservation-friendly businesses. Supporting forest product processing businesses, identifying and signing cooperation agreements to promote sustainable forest management, Supporting consulting to complete Sustainable Forest Management Plans for forest owners... Improving forest management of residential communities. Promoting sustainable livelihood development for communities dependent on forests.

The first year of the Project's activities in 2021 in Nghe An, despite facing many difficulties due to the complicated developments of the Covid-19 pandemic, has been on schedule with the synchronous coordination of stakeholders. Two skill training courses have been organized to promote staff and the community, encouraging the community to actively participate in forest protection. Review and update the list of potential environmentally friendly businesses in supporting the development of value chains. Review and update maps for forest owners, assess the current status of payment maps ofForest protection and development fund

According to the plan in Nghe An, in 6 years the project will complete the following tasks: 5,000 people will be trained to improve their capacity in sustainable forest management. About 12,000 people will benefit from livelihood activities, 14 organizations will have their capacity in forest governance improved. About 8 businesses will receive technical support from the Project, over 52,000 hectares of forest will be better managed and protected. Over 1.6 million tons of CO2 will be absorbed and stored.

Comrade Hoang Nghia Hieu - Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee said: In the past time, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have supported Nghe An, solving the local difficulties and challenges in the forestry sector. Through this working session, Nghe An province hopes to receive support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Forestry Project Management Board and the implementing unit of the Forest Protection Management component, to support Nghe An to deploy. Organize and implement well the goals set by the Project.

At the meeting, comrade Hoang Nghia Hieu - Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee affirmed: Nghe An province commits to fully and promptly arrange human resources and counterpart funds to implement the Projects, and will direct relevant departments, branches and localities to closely coordinate and create favorable conditions to continue to build programs and projects to effectively serve the socio-economic development of the locality.
