Nghi Loc: Drought, more than 4,500 hectares of land left fallow

After the recent rains, the Vung Trang dam of Nghi Van commune has little water but it is not enough to supply spring rice. |
Mr. Tran Van Sao - Chairman of Nghi Van Commune People's Committee, Nghi Loc District shared: The locality has 600 hectares of land for wet rice production and 450 hectares of land for growing other crops. Because 100% of the cultivated area depends on the water source of the dam, in years of severe drought, Nghi Van Commune only produces one spring rice crop, the rest is left fallow for many months.
This winter-spring crop, the locality has planted 593 hectares of rice, however, due to limited irrigation water, the rice yield will be low. Before entering the winter-spring crop, the water level of 17 dams in the commune dropped below 40% of the reserve. Although the commune directed localities to regulate irrigation water appropriately and economically, the amount of irrigation water is still seriously lacking.
Currently, most of the dams in Nghi Loc district are at risk of running out of water and are unable to irrigate. The water volume of the dams in the area is only 30-50% of the designed capacity, and many dam owners cannot regulate water for production. This has not only left more than 4,500 hectares of the district's production land abandoned but also affected the productivity of 7,000 hectares of spring rice in the area.
