Thinking that his wife was texting another man, Khiem became jealous and stabbed her many times in the garden of his father-in-law's house.

On March 8, 2014, Son La Provincial Police received a report that Ms. Lo Thi Chung (31 years old, Yen Chau district) went to the Mo Tuoi village cultural house the night before but did not return. Behind her father's house, people found a pair of sandals, a kettle, blood and hair on the ground.

Dozens of Son La police officers came to investigate the scene and found blood stains on the outside wall of the house, and the surrounding grass and trees had been trampled. Detectives determined that this could be a murder case, and the perpetrator hid the body elsewhere after committing the crime.

According to witness reports, on the evening of March 7, 2014, Ms. Chung was assigned by the Mo Tuoi village women's association to provide water for a cultural exchange. At 9:00 p.m., she took a kettle to her father's house to get water to boil and then went missing.

Neighbors said Ms. Chung was gentle and sociable, and had no serious conflicts that led to her death. Detectives hypothesized that she was murdered by a robber or due to love conflicts or jealousy.

After many days of searching, late in the afternoon of March 10, 2014, authorities discovered a sack containing Ms. Chung’s body under a stream in Mo Tuoi village, 3km from the cultural house. The victim died three days ago, and her body had many slash marks.

For the crime he committed, Khiem was sentenced to death.

Because the victim still had gold earrings and money, the detectives ruled out robbery. Based on the many slash marks, the investigation team determined that the murderer had committed the crime in a fit of rage. Of the two remaining hypotheses, the police were inclined to believe that a marital dispute had occurred, leading to the murder.

During the investigation into the relationship, the police found that Ms. Chung's husband, Vi Van Khiem, was often jealous because his wife often participated in local cultural activities and had a wide network of relationships.

When working with the police, Khiem confessed that on the day his wife went missing, he went to the cultural house to watch a performance, and after it ended, he went drinking with friends.

Approaching Chung's son, the authorities received information that his father returned home around 11pm and said his mother was at the cultural house. At midnight, Khiem left home on a motorbike and returned 30 minutes later.

Continuing to work with Khiem, the investigator asked him to prove where he went and what he did between 9pm and 11pm, but he could not give a convincing answer. Searching Khiem's house, the police confiscated a bloody shirt and a knife. The forensic results showed that the blood belonged to Khiem and Ms. Chung. At this time, Khiem confessed to the crime.

Khiem confessed that on the evening of March 7, 2014, after getting drunk, he went to the cultural house to watch a performance. Two hours later, he saw his wife go to her father's house to get water, texting on her phone as she walked, suspecting that she was texting another man. He became jealous, yelled at her, and then murdered her.... Early the next morning, Khiem put the body in a sack and hid it in a stream.

After committing the crime, Khiem reported to the village cadre that his wife was missing to mislead the investigation agency.

At the first instance trial held in April 2014, the People's Court of Son La province sentenced Khiem to death for murder. The appeals court later upheld this sentence.
