That touching and admirable story was recorded by photographer Tran Vinh Hang in November 2002, when he went on a trip to explore the Xiangxi Mountains in Hunan Province, China. At that time, he took a memorable photo of three mountain children carrying bundles of dry firewood on their backs. He was extremely surprised to discover that the only girl in the photo had no arms.
Huong Loi Binh's extraordinary will to live made him admire her. However, he had to leave because of work. Since then, every year the kind photographer has taken the time to return to visit and help the poor girl's family, and at the same time record the everyday moments of the armless girl.

The image of three children carrying a bundle of firewood on their backs larger than a person moved photographer Vinh Hang. |
Li Ping was born with intact limbs like any other normal person. However, disaster struck in 1992, when one stormy night she was electrocuted and the 4-year-old girl lost both her arms forever. The family had to sell a cow, a dozen sheep and a dozen hectares of corn - almost all the valuable assets of a mountainous family - to pay for her treatment. After that accident, the pain and financial burden on her parents forced them to leave home to go to Guangdong to earn a living, leaving Li Ping and her three siblings to be raised by their grandparents, who were over 60 years old.
Living with his grandparents in their sixties and two younger brothers who are only 1-3 years younger than him, Huong Loi Binh is also aware of his difficult life and always tries to find ways to improve himself so as not to become a burden to the whole family.
Huong Loi Binh's grandparents said that fortunately, since the accident, their granddaughter seemed immune to any kind of illness, even a mild cold. The three children of the Huong family were like weeds growing on the side of the road, growing stronger day by day amidst the storms and winds.
With extraordinary determination and willpower, she has learned to use other parts of her body for her disabled hands skillfully. It is hard to imagine how much a 4-year-old girl struggled when she had to use her feet to do everything from big to small: housework, eating, embroidering or writing...

Loi Binh always tries to improve in life. She can eat by herself, do housework, practice writing, or help her family by herding cows, carrying firewood... |
Not only can Loi Binh take care of herself, she can also help with heavy housework. At the age of 15, she can herd buffalo and cows. The villagers always admire her skinny figure, gritting her teeth and using her neck to pull the rope to herd the cows.
Because of her physical disability and having to live in a rugged mountainous area with a poor family, Loi Binh has never been to school. The studious girl only knows how to take advantage of the time when taking her younger brother on the 40 km mountain road to class and then sitting in the hallway to eavesdrop on her studies. Sometimes, she also borrows her younger brothers' books to practice more. However, that does not mean she is inferior to everyone else. Loi Binh's grandmother revealed that she can write more words than her two younger brothers who are in a proper classroom. Despite the difficulties and hardships in life, Huong Loi Binh always lives happily and loves life.
After his grandfather passed away, his old and weak grandmother was taken in by his uncle. His two younger brothers gradually followed their parents to Guangdong to work as hired laborers. The neighbors began to migrate, leaving only Huong Loi Binh determined to stay in his homeland.

It was not until 10 years later, in 2013, that the armless girl was reunited with her family. The Huong family lived in a garbage-filled village with a polluted river running through it. Their neighbors were all poor laborers from other regions.
Since moving in with her parents, Li Ping often helps her mother with housework. In her free time, she often shares her sudden feelings online. With her soft voice and interesting stories, she has received the admiration of many boys. Not long after, Li Ping fell in love with a poor boy from Guangxi, who promised to take care of her for the rest of her life. After a period of getting to know each other, the two became so attached that they could not be separated.
In early 2016, Huong Loi Binh gave birth to her first daughter at the age of 28. Like many other mothers, she breastfed and cared for her child with the boundless love of a mother. Although life is still difficult, the young armless mother is always optimistic and loves life. The story of the armless girl who refused to surrender to fate, along with Huong Loi Binh's photo of breastfeeding her child, is still being shared by the community.
