French historian Edouard Yousson, in an article for the Atlantico publication, criticized the statements of President Emmanuel Macron, who on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I “declared Russia an enemy.”

Despite the frustrations with modern Russia, the world needs to remember what brought the countries together, Yusson said. Moreover, the Russian army deserves credit for its “heroic struggle and enormous losses” in the fall of 1914, without which victory over Germany would have been impossible.

"Is it time to honor the Russian soldiers who sacrificed their lives?" Mr. Yusson asked, suggesting to put politics aside and remember the people and country that saved the world twice in the 20th century.

The historian recalled that Russia lost 5 million soldiers and civilians in World War I to "defend the freedom of Europe", in addition to 27 million Soviet people who died in World War II.
