Heartbreaking scene of an old mother calling out the name of her drowning son in Thanh Chuong
(Baonghean.vn) - Her husband died early, she worked all kinds of jobs to raise her son. When the boy was just starting to help his mother and support the family, he unfortunately drowned and died.
That is the situation of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Lien (58 years old) living in Giang Nam village, Thanh Giang commune (Thanh Chuong). Her son,Pham Van Chung (16 years old) drowned, just found the body on the afternoon of June 6.
In the past two days, no one in Giang Lam village did not sympathize with Mrs. Lien's situation.

Previously, at 2 p.m. on June 5, due to the hot weather, Pham Van Chung and a friend went swimming in the Lam River and unfortunately drowned. At the same time, people heard the two children's cries for help and quickly went into the river. When they brought the friend who was swimming with Chung to the shore and returned to continue saving Chung, they could no longer see Chung.
After receiving the information, at around 4:30 p.m. the same day, local rescue forces arrived at the scene and began searching for Chung. It was not until 5:10 p.m. on June 6 that his body was found.
Hearing the bad news about her son, Mrs. Lien collapsed. On the porch, the old mother with white hair and a haggard face whispered her son's name in despair, making the neighbors who witnessed it unable to bear it.

She got married at the age of 40 and gave birth to Chung, which was a home filled with boundless love for Mrs. Lien. But her happiness was short-lived, when Chung was just 9 years old, her husband unfortunately fell ill and passed away. From then on, life, which was already difficult, became even more miserable.
Without a male breadwinner, to make ends meet and raise her children, Ms. Lien had to do all kinds of jobs. Whenever the villagers hired her, she would do it. From planting rice, working in the fields, to being a construction worker, she would do anything to earn money to raise her children. At nearly 60 years old, with gray hair and a hunched back like an old woman, she could not do heavy work, so she went to the market to sell vegetables to earn money to buy rice to live on and to send her children to school.
Loving and understanding the hard sacrifices of his mother, Chung is very obedient. After school, he always helps his mother with housework. Because he understands the family situation, after finishing 9th grade, he dropped out of school to work to help ease the economic burden for his mother. "The young rely on their father, the old rely on their children", thinking that in her old age, Mrs. Lien could peacefully rely on her only son, but now she has to suffer the adversity of "white hair sending off green hair".

“Last year, he earned money to bring home and tell his mother to fix the yard and dig a well. When it was hot, he carried fans for people and saved his salary to buy a fan for his mother to lie down on to cool off. He also worked on a wedding stage with Mr. Huan. He felt sorry for him and gave him an old refrigerator to use. Chung also said that next year he would earn money to buy another set of tables and chairs. Chung…!” - Mrs. Lien shared, choking with tears.
Chung’s family is one of the most disadvantaged in the village. Seeing that Lien’s family lived in a makeshift house that was leaky and wet from the rain and wind, the local leaders and villagers of Con Tran contributed money and effort to build a level 4 house for the mother and child.
Mr. Tuong Quoc Thanh - Secretary of Thanh Giang Commune Party Committee said: “In 2017, the commune allocated 5 million VND from the poor household fund and called on neighbors to donate. Some contributed money, some contributed to the construction, some donated bricks and sand, with the total value of the house being about 30 million VND. Ms. Lien's situation is very pitiful. For a long time, the mother and child have relied on each other to live. Now that Chung has had an accident and passed away, we hope that benefactors will help Ms. Lien ease this difficulty.”
