On July 30, the Hanoi People's Court opened the first instance trial of Phan Van Anh Vu (aka Vu "nhom", born in 1975, residing in Hai Chau district, Da Nang city); Phan Huu Tuan (born in 1955, residing in Tay Ho district, Hanoi city - former Deputy Director General of Intelligence - Ministry of Public Security, retired) and Nguyen Huu Bach (born in 1962, residing in Hoang Mai district, Hanoi city - former officer of the Ministry of Public Security) in the case of "Intentionally revealing state secrets", according to the provisions of Article 337 - Penal Code 2015.

The trial was held behind closed doors for one day, with only the verdict being made public. Dozens of traffic police, judicial support police, and police from Tran Hung Dao ward (Hoan Kiem district) were mobilized to protect the trial. Many relatives of the defendants were present in the private room of the Hanoi People's Court awaiting the verdict.

In the sentencing, the representative of the Hanoi People's Court said that after questioning and arguing in court, the panel of judges determined the charges and declared the defendants Phan Van Anh Vu, Phan Huu Tuan, and Nguyen Huu Bach guilty of "Intentionally revealing state secrets". Accordingly, Phan Van Anh Vu was sentenced to 9 years in prison, Phan Huu Tuan to 7 years in prison, and Nguyen Huu Bach to 6 years in prison.

The Hanoi People's Court also announced the destruction of a number of mobile phones, DVDs, USBs, and portable hard drives. Regarding court fees, the defendants are obliged to pay 200,000 VND each. The defendants have the right to appeal the verdict within 15 days from the date of the verdict.

Vu "nhom" was sentenced to 9 years in prison by the Hanoi People's Court for "Intentionally revealing state secrets".

Previously, in December 2017, the Investigation Security Agency - Ministry of Public Security prosecuted Mr. Phan Van Anh Vu for "Intentionally disclosing State secret documents". When searching his private home in Da Nang, Mr. Vu was not present at his residence, so the Investigation Security Agency issued a wanted notice for Vu.

On January 2, 2018, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) detained a man named Phan Van Anh Vu for violating the Immigration Act. Two days later, a Vietnam Airlines flight from Singapore to Hanoi carrying Mr. Vu landed at Noi Bai International Airport.
