Raising pigs and chickens makes a profit of half a billion dong per year
Mr. Hoang Dinh Duyen - village 10, Quynh Trang commune (Hoang Mai town) is "famous" not because he has held the position of village chief for nearly 20 years, but because he has the will to get rich, opening up a new direction for economic development here.
In 2008, Mr. Duyen boldly received 2.5 hectares of wild hill land in Phe hill area, hamlet 10 to build a farm. At first, he encountered many difficulties due to lack of capital and experience. But with determination to do it to the end, he borrowed money from relatives and friends, then mortgaged the land title to borrow money from the bank to invest in renovating the land and building a system of livestock barns. For breeding stock, he went to Hanoi to find sugarcane chickens and fighting chickens from Ha Tay to bring back for breeding; the breeding pigs were also fertilized from breeding pigs from the North...

Realizing that the basic factor in animal husbandry is to master the techniques, Mr. Duyen has researched and searched for books, documents, and visited effective farm models to apply. In the first 6 months of the farm's operation, after deducting expenses, Mr. Duyen earned a net profit of 100 million VND. This is the motivation for him to continue investing and expanding the scale of animal husbandry. Now each year, his family farm raises 3-4 batches of chickens, each batch of 4,000-5,000 chickens, 3 batches of pigs, each batch of 100 pigs, with a total revenue of 2.5-3 billion VND, and a net profit of at least 500 million VND.
Sharing his experience in caring for livestock in hot weather conditions, Mr. Duyen said: The barn system is mostly covered with corrugated iron roofs, and it is necessary to invest in an automatic misting system on the roof so that when it is too hot, it is necessary to regularly water, create humidity, and lower the temperature in the barn, contributing to limiting disease. In addition, it is necessary to strictly implement the vaccination regime, clean the barn, and create ventilation for the livestock.
Mr. Ho Van Tuan, Vice Chairman of Quynh Trang Commune People's Committee, said: Recently, the Commune People's Committee has developed a plan to support households in building family and farm models by creating favorable conditions in terms of land acquisition procedures, supporting low-interest loans, and supporting model development costs from the local budget from 5 to 10 million VND. Mr. Hoang Dinh Duyen's farm scale is supported with 10 million VND, which is a model that Quynh Trang Commune is aiming to replicate, in order to increase income for people and break the monoculture in agricultural production in the locality.
Faithful to... sika deer
Taking advantage of the large land in the mountainous area, Mr. Le Tran Trang in hamlet 22, Quynh Vinh commune (Hoang Mai town) has succeeded in raising spotted deer and planting forests.
Quynh Vinh commune has 2,300 hectares of forest land, most of which is barren. If growing short-term agricultural crops and raising poultry does not bring high economic efficiency. Therefore, after a period of research and learning from many places, Mr. Le Tran Trang decided to choose the profession of raising spotted deer. With an area of 5 hectares, Mr. Trang built 4 rows of deer pens. Currently, his family raises 50 spotted deer, both for antlers and for reproduction. Food for deer is grown by the family in the home garden; in addition to fresh grass, Mr. Trang also reserves corn leaves, dried peanuts and crushed corn kernels to prepare for the rainy season. To ensure adequate food sources, he grows 5 sao of corn, harvesting 4 crops each year with an output of 5 tons. Up to now, his family has raised deer for nearly 30 years; at peak times, the number of deer raised was up to 100.
Mr. Trang said: Compared to other livestock, raising deer brings high income; a deer can have its velvet cut once a year, the price ranges from 10-12 million VND/kg; currently, each year his family collects over 20 kg of deer velvet, which is easy to consume. In addition, the herd of female deer that gives birth to 10 deer/year brings him a considerable income from selling breeding deer at the price of 8-10 million VND/pair of deer.
Besides raising deer, Mr. Trang's family focuses on developing forest plantation (about more than 40 hectares) with diverse trees such as teak, acacia, eucalyptus. Between the large trees, he also plants fruit trees to both preserve the land and increase income. Thanks to hard work, Mr. Trang's family is now one of the typical households developing the local economy with an average income of 300 - 400 million VND/year.
"King" of shrimp breeds
Mr. Nguyen Hong Cuong, Director of Hai Tuan Co., Ltd., was one of the first three people in Quynh Luu district (before separation) to receive land for extensive shrimp farming in the 1990s. In 2001, when the giant tiger prawn was in high demand, he decided to breed giant tiger prawns, and the first batch of giant tiger prawns was successful beyond expectations. Since then, Mr. Cuong's farm has become the only address supplying giant tiger prawns to the entire North. In 2003, he boldly opened Hai Tuan Co., Ltd., hired technical experts and workers, and received 20 hectares of land in Quynh Dy ward (Hoang Mai town) to raise commercial white-leg shrimp on a large scale. After a while, realizing that depending on the source of shrimp breeds in the South was facing many difficulties, including the cause of poor quality of the breeds, Mr. Cuong decided to breed the shrimps himself. No sooner said than done, at the end of 2014, he invested more than 1.5 billion VND to renovate and upgrade the shrimp breeding farm system in Quynh Lien commune with 6 parent shrimp tanks, 3 specialized breeding tanks and 40 shrimp breeding tanks.
Right in the first crop, Mr. Cuong's shrimp farm supplied 150 million shrimp seeds to people in the region and the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Vung Tau. Mr. Nguyen An Tan in Mai Hung ward, one of the households using shrimp seeds produced by Mr. Cuong's farm, said: After many failed attempts at raising shrimp, I went to Mr. Cuong's farm to order shrimp seeds to raise. During the raising process, I saw that the shrimp seeds were beautiful and grew quickly...
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hoc, Head of Nghe An Aquaculture Sub-Department, the successful production of white-leg shrimp in Hoang Mai town by Mr. Nguyen Hong Cuong is considered a breakthrough by shrimp farmers. For a long time, the source of shrimp in the province has mainly depended on the Southern region. Mr. Cuong's successful production of white-leg shrimp will create conditions for shrimp farmers to proactively source seeds, control quality, and ensure the crop season...
Mr. Cuong said: In 2016, according to the plan, the enterprise will import 1,500 pairs of parent shrimp, estimated to produce about 400 - 500 million shrimp seeds, accounting for about 50% of the shrimp seed market share in the whole province. However, to ensure the quality of seeds, it is necessary to do a good job of management from input to output, which requires shrimp seed producers like me to really care about our customers. In addition, there needs to be attention and support from the State for this special seedling industry, because the survival of thousands of shrimp farming households in coastal areas largely depends on the seedling source they choose.
