Quynh Luu farmers win big on Tet vegetable crop

(Baonghean.vn) - The 2015 winter vegetable production season in Quynh Luu district is considered a success as vegetables have good prices. People are actively preparing for the post-Tet vegetable market.

In the first days of the new year, in the district's major vegetable growing areas, Quynh Minh, Quynh Luong and Quynh Bang communes, the joy of high prices for winter vegetables has created confidence for people to actively take care of their vegetable crops after Tet.

Ms. Bui Thi Thanh in Hamlet 4, Quynh Luong Commune grows 3 sao of kohlrabi. She said: Never before have kohlrabi been sold at such a high price of 25,000 to 30,000 VND/kg in the field before and during Tet this year, 3 times higher than previous years.

While harvesting nearly 3 sao of kohlrabi in the field, Mrs. Bui Thi Thanh in Hamlet 4, Quynh Luong Commune said: Never before has the winter vegetable crop been as successful as this year. Although the rainy and cold weather has had a negative impact on the growth of vegetables, thanks to careful care and prevention, people's vegetables are still guaranteed to serve Tet, and the price of vegetables is still 3-4 times higher than usual. "During Tet, my family sold nearly 20 million VND worth of vegetables, now there is nearly 1 sao of kohlrabi left to sell after Tet. This winter vegetable crop, my family earned nearly 30 million VND in profit," Mrs. Thanh said excitedly.

Sharing the joy of the successful winter vegetable crop, Mr. Pham Van Minh in Hamlet 5, Quynh Luong Commune said: In this year's Tet vegetable crop, his family planted 2 sao of mustard greens, cauliflower, herbs, cabbage... According to him, these are the best-selling vegetables during the recent Tet holidays. Due to the prolonged cold weather, Tet vegetables grow slowly, requiring farmers to take care of them and apply higher techniques. But in return, the selling price is higher, usually 2 to 3 times higher per sao than normal vegetable growing. Like winter vegetables in previous years, kohlrabi is about 10-12 thousand VND/kg, but this year the price is up to 30-40 thousand VND/kg; cauliflower is 15 thousand VND/head, 10 thousand VND/head higher than last year.

Nguyen Thi Lan, hamlet 4, Quynh Minh commune, said that this year, vegetable prices are higher than in previous years, so she arranged her housework to go to the field to take care of and water nearly 1 sao of cauliflower. It is expected to be harvested in about 10 days.

The entire Quynh Luong commune has 250 hectares of land specializing in growing vegetables all year round and in the winter season this area will be expanded by about 50 hectares to produce winter vegetables to serve the occasion before, during and after Tet. In 2015, the total vegetable output of the commune reached more than 20 thousand tons with a value of nearly 100 billion VND.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tue - Chairman of Quynh Luong Commune People's Committee said: Although the climate this year is erratic, the prolonged cold rain has caused the winter vegetable crop to grow slowly, stagnating for a short time, the yield is a little lower than previous years, but in general, it has not had a big impact on the production of the people. In return, this year the price is relatively higher than last year, so the people are very excited to increase production. If last year there was a surplus of vegetables after Tet, it is unlikely to happen this year, because all the vegetables grown at the time of harvest have been purchased.

Currently, the purchase price at the field for kohlrabi is 20,000 VND/kg, cabbage 25-30 thousand/kg; cauliflower 5,000-6,000 VND/bud; tomato 10,000-12,000 VND/kg... The prices of the above vegetables have increased 2-fold compared to normal days and previous years. On average, this year's winter crop, people earn about 20-25 million VND/sao. It is estimated that the total income has increased by more than 30% compared to last year's winter vegetable crop.

In Quynh Minh commune, the atmosphere of vegetable production is no less bustling. The successful winter vegetable crop has urged people to enthusiastically produce vegetables to serve market demand. Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong said: This year's winter crop harvest is much better than previous years, although vegetables are a bit underdeveloped, the price is much higher than last year. All the harvested vegetables are purchased by retailers, there is no inventory left. The selling price is stable, people are very excited, after harvesting this crop of vegetables, I will plant more, in time to sell in time for Tet.

With a good winter vegetable crop, people growing vegetables in Quynh Luu district are happy and excited and are continuing to start production to serve the market after Tet.
