Biden announces re-election as president because American democracy is under threat
(Baonghean.vn) - US President Joe Biden, who is raising funds for his re-election campaign while in New York for meetings with world leaders, on September 18 acknowledged concerns about his age, but affirmed that he would run because democracy is under threat.

“It seems like a lot of people are paying attention to my age,” the 80-year-old politician told supporters at a fundraising event on the evening of September 18, according to Reuters. “I understand. Believe me, I understand better than anyone.”
Biden defeated former President Donald Trump, a “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) Republican, in the 2020 election and could face him again next year. Trump is now the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
“I am running because democracy is under threat,” President Biden said. “There is no doubt that Donald Trump and his MAGA Republicans are determined to destroy American democracy. I will always defend and fight for our democracy.”
Biden will address the United Nations General Assembly on September 19 and is expected to press leaders to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight with Russia. The US president has sought to rally countries to stand up to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In an interview broadcast on September 17 on NBC's "Meet the Press," Mr. Trump noted that he personally has a good relationship with Mr. Putin, and affirmed that he would also maintain a tough stance on Russia when he becomes president.
For his part, Mr. Biden declared that he would not “side with” Mr. Putin, and that “Trump and his MAGA friends may bow their heads,” but he “will not do so.”
