Russian President Vladimir Putin says developing genetically modified soldiers will be the next stage of military combat - and it will be a weapon more terrifying than nuclear bombs.

Speaking at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Sochi on October 22, Mr. Putin said Russian scientists would soon crack the genetic code and create something "worse than a nuclear bomb."

According to the British newspaper Express, in a shocking speech, the Russian leader said the world will soon see high-tech superhuman soldiers who never feel pain or fear. He stressed that science is advancing so fast that the world does not have much time to develop regulations around these advances.

The Kremlin chief revealed the possibility of "creating people with redesigned features" is within reach.

"Humans have the opportunity to delve into the genetic code created either by nature or by God. All sorts of practical results can follow. Imagine one could create a human being, not just in theory but in practice.

That person could be a gifted mathematician, a talented musician or a soldier who fights without fear, without regret or pain. As you know, humanity may enter, very likely in the near future, a period of extremely difficult existence," he said.

President Putin said such developments were inevitable, and he called on world leaders to work together to develop ethical rules regarding 'such innovations'.

"When we do something, whatever it is, I want to reiterate that we must never forget the ethical foundations of our work."

The program where President Putin spoke was organized by the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) together with the International Students Association.
