Putin congratulates Russian Jews on New Year

Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Russian Jews on the Jewish New Year and wished them good health and prosperity, saying they are a happy people.

Mr. Putin at a meeting with the Chief Rabbi of Russian Jews, Mr. Berel Lazar, and the Chairman of the Federation of Russian Jewish Communities, Mr. Alexander Boroda.

"Today, the Jewish people celebrate Rosh Hashanah - the New Year. I want to congratulate you, all Jews living in Russia, on the occasion of the New Year, wishing you happiness, health, success and peace in every family," Putin said at a meeting with the Chief Rabbi of Russian Jews Berel Lazar and Chairman of the Federation of Russian Jewish Communities Alexander Boroda.

"Jews are happy people. Yesterday was the birthday of Moscow. Today is the day of the city's mayoral elections and Rosh Hashanah. Two holidays in a row," the head of state remarked.

Mr. Berel Lazar also told the president about the holiday as well as the traditions associated with this holiday.
