"Would you believe that the losers from the New York Times just released a document claiming that the United States is substantially increasing its cyber attacks on Russia? This is a real betrayal of a great newspaper, by very disappointingly trying to make up a story, any story, even if it is bad for our Country... besides, it is not true" – Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter.

Mr. Trump called the article's author a "coward" and an "enemy of the people."

The corresponding NYT article was published a few hours earlier.

The article, citing current and former US government officials, said the increase in cyberattacks on Russia's power grid is "demonstration that the Trump administration is using new powers to deploy more powerful cyber tools."

“These actions have become much more active over the past year. We are working on a scale that we could not have imagined a few years ago,” the newspaper quoted one of the senior representatives of the task force as saying.
