The movie 'Descendants of the Sun' brought Korea more than 880 million USD

The latest hit drama 'Descendants of the Sun' by national television station KBS has brought in more than 880 million USD to Korea.

According to Yonhap, on the morning of April 29, the Export-Import Bank of Korea (KEXIM) released a research report estimating the direct and indirect economic effects of the TV series Descendants of the Sun to be more than 1,000 billion won (880 million USD).

Descendants of the Sun is the story of a chance encounter that made handsome captain Yoo Shi Jin (Song Joong Ki) fall in love at first sight with beautiful doctor Kang Mo Yeon (Song Hye Kyo).

KEXIM, a state-owned bank, is a major sponsor of the drama that is sweeping Asia, starring Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo. Descendants of the Sun has been sold to major markets such as China, Japan, and 30 other countries, with an estimated total revenue of 7 billion won.

Based on another hit drama, Daejanggeum in 2004, KEXIM's report predicts Descendants of the Sun will bring in up to 10 billion won from overseas markets.

Daejanggeum is the story of an orphaned chef who becomes the king's first female physician, which was sold to 87 countries around the world, bringing in 13 billion won.

Descendants of the Sun indirectly boosted exports of cars and other related products worth about 300 billion won, while attracting about 100,000 more foreign tourists to Korea, KEXIM reported.

In addition, "Descendants of the Sun" is also expected to create about 590 billion won in increased production, about 200 billion won in added value and about 4,500 new jobs.

"The cultural content industry has higher added value than other industries. There is a need to provide more funding for film production as China's entertainment sector expands rapidly," the report said.

According to KEXIM, a 1% increase in cultural product exports will help increase exports of related consumer goods by 0.03%./.
