"I made a mistake and I admit it. I will never make this mistake again. I have learned my lesson," AP quoted Democratic Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal as telling reporters at a church in Ferguson, Missouri, yesterday. "President Trump, I apologize to you and your family."
However, Senator Chappelle-Nadal said she had no intention of resigning under pressure from other Democrats and Republicans. "I will continue to fight for the issues that are really, really important," she stressed.
Chappelle-Nadal posted a comment on Facebook on August 17 saying she hoped US President Donald Trump would be assassinated. She later deleted the message and apologized for the language., it is still under investigation by the US Secret Service.Chappelle-Nadalsaid she posted the comment out of frustration with the current political climate.
Chappelle-Nadal’s controversial comments come amid a week of division and chaos in the United States following violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, surrounding a white supremacist rally. On August 12, a car plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one woman and injuring several others.
Mr Trump was criticised for his initial response, when he condemned the violence as coming from “many sides”. He later specifically condemned white supremacist groups, but on August 15, at a press conference at Trump Tower in New York, he repeated his initial comments, saying that “both sides” were responsible for the violence.
