South Korean marines conducted a massive military exercise on Baengnyeong Island near the North Korean border on September 6 amid rising tensions in the region following Pyongyang's nuclear test.

On September 6, the South Korean Marine Corps conducted a massive military exercise on Baengnyeong Island, an area located close to the Northern Limit Line (NLL) separating North and South Korea. |
The exercise involved six brigades, AH-1S helicopters, amphibious assault vehicles and marines. |
The purpose of the exercise is to enhance the response capability and combat readiness of the South Korean army in the context of increasingly escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula. |
Previously, in August, North Korean special forces also conducted an island-capturing exercise with the simulated attack target being South Korea's Baengnyeong Island. |
On September 7, US military vehicles transported four launchers of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system to the installation site in Seoungju, South Korea. The system is deployed to counter the threat from North Korean missiles. |
The South Korean military has recently conducted a series of drills involving many forces after North Korea announced it had successfully tested a thermonuclear bomb mounted on an intercontinental ballistic missile. |
On September 5, the South Korean navy conducted a large-scale live-fire exercise in the Sea of Japan. Previously, on September 3, the military also conducted a drill with the simulated target of attack being North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear test site. |
In addition, the US and South Korea also plan to conduct joint military exercises. In a phone call earlier this week, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and US President Donald Trump agreed to work together to deal with the threat from North Korea. |
