(Baonghean.vn) - After discovering the brown planthopper problem in rice, specialized departments of Que Phong district sent staff to the rice fields to work with local authorities to inspect and promptly implement epidemic control measures.

Field inspections of rice fields in Tri Le commune with officers from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Que Phong District Agricultural Service Center showed that, as of September 14, 2023, the rice areas damaged by brown planthoppers in the commune had been controlled, with no signs of spreading.

Mr. Lu Van Cuong - Vice Chairman of Tri Le Commune People's Committee also said that on September 13-14, officials of the District People's Committee and the Agricultural Service Center also went to the place to check and guide to prevent the spread of the disease. In villages with large rice growing areas such as Kem Don, Nong village, Cam village, Lien Hop, Lam Hop, the local authorities always remind people to visit the fields, promptly detect areas affected by pests and have sprayed pesticides to prevent damage and spread.

Mr. Phan Xuan Hung - Deputy Director of the Que Phong District Agricultural Service Center said that through understanding the situation and directly inspecting the locality from September 13-14 in Tri Le commune, it was found that this is an area where the rice area damaged by brown planthoppers is not much, and has basically been controlled. The Center has guided and coordinated with the locality to deploy pesticide spraying for people.

In Chau Kim commune, according to the leader of the commune People's Committee, the current brown planthopper epidemic is quite severe on an area of about 47 hectares of rice. The locality has instructed people to spray pesticides to prevent the spread of the epidemic. In addition, some areas with light planthopper infestation have also been sprayed for prevention and the situation will continue to be closely monitored.

According to statistics of Que Phong District People's Committee, as of September 15, 2023, the 2023 winter-spring rice crop in the district is in the stage of heading, a small area has blossomed. Through the joint inspection of the Agricultural Service Center and the District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, a number of pests and diseases have appeared on the current winter-spring rice crop such as: various types of planthoppers, 6th generation of small leaf rollers... The average density of planthoppers is from 700-800 individuals/m2, at high altitudes 1,500-2,000 individuals/m2, in some places up to over 3,000 individuals/m2. Planthoppers are mainly in the adult and larval stages. There are also white-backed and brown planthoppers, however the number of white-backed planthoppers is higher than that of brown planthoppers.

Currently, Que Phong has more than 257 hectares of winter-spring rice seriously infected with pests and diseases. Photo: Xuan Hoang

The infected area according to the communes' reports and through the actual inspection of professional staff is more than 1,437 hectares. Of which, about 678 hectares are lightly infected, about 466 hectares are moderately infected, about 357 hectares are heavily infected, some areas have burned. The cause was initially determined to be that the pesticides had not been sprayed, or the wrong pesticides were sprayed, the pesticides were not sprayed uniformly, and in addition, the weather was quite complicated...

Que Phong District Agricultural Service Center also forecasts and disseminates to people the situation of pests and diseases and measures to prevent and control them, not allowing the disease to spread strongly.

In Que Phong, the reality shows that compared to previous years, this year the planthoppers and leaf rollers appeared earlier and it is forecasted that in the coming time, with the alternating sunny and rainy weather conditions and the current source of planthoppers, it will create conditions for planthoppers to continue to increase their density and cause a widespread "planthopper burn" phenomenon if not sprayed in time. On the other hand, the 6th generation of leaf rollers has a phenomenon of overlapping many generations, so it is forecasted that in the coming time, the 7th generation of leaf rollers may appear during the flowering stage of the summer-autumn rice crop. This is a stage that greatly affects productivity.

Therefore, the district's professional staff are continuing to urge and direct the People's Committees of communes and towns to simultaneously spray and eliminate rice areas infected with planthoppers with a density of 1,000 insects/m2.2for pre-flowering rice fields, and 2,000 individuals/m2or more for areas from flowering and ripening stages. Spray to kill small leaf rollers with a density of 50 insects/m2or more for rice fields in the pre-flowering stage and 30 individuals/m2or more for the following areas.

The District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Agricultural Service Center, and the People's Committees of communes and towns continue to closely monitor and inspect the situation of planthoppers to advise on timely treatment measures, minimizing the damage caused by pests. In particular, pay attention to monitoring the development of the 6th generation of small leaf rollers to provide timely recommendations and prevention measures.

The Center has also collected white-backed planthopper samples and sent them to the Nghe An Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection to test for Black-Striped Dwarf Virus and the results were negative on August 1, 2023.
